New headphones - KEF M500, for the first time a tolerably comfortable pair of 'on ears', only got them yesterday but very impressed so far. Very full sounding with excellent clarity and fast dynamics. Also had an impressive set of B&O A8 'ear hook' headphones for a week or so. A bit of a bugger to get them seated right, but there's a knack to it. Very good sound.

Do the B&Os have spring loading to keep the earpiece against your ear?

Do the B&Os have spring loading to keep the earpiece against your ear? No, not spring loaded, but when properly seated they fit inside the anti tragus (I had to look that up!) and are quite firmly held by that.

I've decided that life gets boring when you have too many 'destination' components. The fun is in the journey. So my destination Marantz amp is having a bit of a rest. The current setup of electronics looks like this ... A Hegel H90 integrated amp has joined the party chez Jerry. A bit of a bonkers review, which I have to say did pique my interest, here www.hifiplus.com/articles/hegel-h90-integrated-amplifier/It's got a DAC on board, but my Audiobyte sounds that important little bit better. I've had it 5 days or so now and it is settling in nicely. I don't think anyone would mistake the sound for an el84 valve amp - it has a rather stark and unromantic realism in the higher frequencies that takes few prisoners. But it has its own charms. It has a vice like grip over the speakers - a mere 60wpc, but the high current delivery capability rather makes that sound a substantial underestimate. It's nice to be amp-swapping again.

Jerry, something about The Truth piques my interest even though it looks like crap. Did you ever have a unity gain buffer preamp pass through your hands? Something like a Pass (First Watt) B1?

... they address component interfaces, so I guess you'd get most improvement with mismatched components - maybe the kit I had at the time happened to be well matched!

No, I have a different idea and will chase this one down. I have found one XLR example in Canada. It has no volume control which is perfect!

Those KEF M500 on-ears have gone the way of all mortal flesh. It's a personal thing, but I seem to find all on-ears uncumfy. Headphone de jour, and currently residing on the jandl100 bonce, are a revisit from PSB M4U-1. I do like these. A successful revisit is rare for this boxswapper. Damn cheap used, too, as who the hell has heard of PSB headphones in the UK? Big for loudspeakers in the USA, though. I've bought 2 pairs over the last couple of weeks for around £35 each minty -- for a seriously good pair of high end cans. Madness. 1 pair monza red and 1 pair charcoal grey. and

If you're selling a pair of these I wouldn't mind trying them Jerry

If you're selling a pair of these I wouldn't mind trying them Jerry OK, Brian - but I don't expect it to happen for quite a while. They come up on eBay quite frequently, which is where I bought both pairs.

I've sorted the Hegel H90 amp's somewhat exuberant top end, it was getting a bit annoying. Some VdH Thunderline cables between DAC and amp have hit the Synergy button. It's hugely enjoyable all round now. Not that anyone seems interested. ... I wonder what an H190 sounds like. And here for your delectation is a seriously cute, very good sounding and ridiculously cheap headphone amp. A Sabaj PHA3. Analog inputs only. £40 from Amazon. Crazy. That'll do.

Agreed. I know someone who needs exactly something like that and at that sort of price, so thanks Jerry, I will be passing your knowledge on.

That looks like ridiculous good value, I have been interested in getting a new headphone amp so might well take the plunge at that price.

It sounds decent from the off, but really seems to open out after a dozen or so hours. I must admit I an very pleased with it.
