Current electronics .... (actually just trying out Imgur photo hosting ) Yay - that works. So da big boy Pass X150 power amp fed by either Pure Sound L10 or Bel Canto PRe3 preamps. Both preamps are good - I bought the L10 and put the BC up for sale, but actually I think I will keep both and swap 'em every now and then. Both are great preamps in somewhat different ways. DAC is the DAC3 by Starting Point Systems in France. Been here a while now and very happy with it. I use a Halide Bridge USB/SPDIF converter with it, even though it has a good USB input. The Halide just gives it that extra something. And top left my vintage Philips Black Tulip 270 pre and 380 power. I use the 270 as a headphone amp, and excellent it is. Very nice Jerry . Will this put an end to the box swapping

Probably not - I bought a new DAC/pre on eBay about 10 minutes ago

The first, but hopefully not the last, of today's deliveries ... Halide Bridge USB > SPDIF convertor. A Wammer was kind enough to loan me one a few months back, and it went on to my Want List. Finally snaffled one at a nice price. A lovely piece of kit. Raised the old system's sq buy quite a few steps. More presence, more 3D, more vitality without brightness. A lovely thing. Yep, it's an awesome USB front end, the best I've tried. If it's a keeper, and am sure it is, try an AQVOX power supply with it with the "A Type" connector.

Hmm, I'm confused! The AQVOX doodad improves the electrical power transfer via USB? But the Halide Bridge converts the USB audio signal to SPDIF and shoves the audio signal into an RCA digital input - so the power aspect of the USB is not used. Where am I going wrong?
Thanks for the offer, btw - I'll drop you a PM!

Thanks for the offer, btw - I'll drop you a PM! The Halide Bridge is powered from your USB port via a +5V power line in its USB cable with your laptop or computer responsible for this power. The AQVOX interrupts this power supply wire, and feeds in a dedicated / isolated +5V linear power supply line, but leaves the data bits connected to your computer...

Ah, so the Halide Bridge is an active device, OK!

Ah, so the Halide Bridge is an active device, OK! Yes, all USB to SPDIF converters are active. The Halide Bridge is one of the few USB to SPDIF converters that uses the 'Streamlength' asynchronous code, which is implemented on a DSP chip. What this does is ignore the incoming clock of the computer, and instead uses its own on-board clocks to 'request' the data from the computer. This was a real breakthrough at the time as before this, USB to SPDIF converters couldn't control the computer's data transfer & instead had to 'adapt' the clock constantly to generate an SPDIF signal, which means jitter & clock drift.

Wow - I almost understood that.

New toy. My goodness, this is a bit good. Awesome clarity. I've a suspicion that with its pre-amp mode turned off, it will be a great match for the Pure Sound L10 valve pre. I'll try that in a week or so - I'll enjoy the 851D's standalone performance for a while.

Predictably enough, I couldn't wait a week or so to see what the L10 pre brought to the party. More like an hour or so. Yup, superb. You can't beat a system with a great active pre, imo.

Thanks to Neil / yomanze for his advice and loaner offer on the AqVox PSU for my Halide Bridge USB/SPDIF converter. After my to-ing and fro-ing about when I'd be around to receive his loaner, I decided just to buy the damn thing and see how I got on with it. Refund option from Audio Seduction, so no problems there. The PSU arrived today - thanks Neil, the brief review is that it just sounds better! I suspect the sound is more transparent and I can hear 'deeper' into the recording, with the music and the space it was recorded in being more clearly delineated. Thanks for the advice, Neil, it's a winner.

Has he really gone? - or do I need to put a block on the idiot? Im not an Idiot. However i do appologize. I too have now sold my Turntable & Record Collection.. Never ever as long as i live will i go back to Vinyl. Its CD's to Lossless files from now on. I always always found LP's to sound poor & i do believe i have spend thousands over the years swapping arms & Cartridges trying to get blood from a stone. On the other hand 12" singles sounded good but i found the faster speed made the Surface noise more pronounced. At the end of the day is both too much trouble & too costly to even bother with imho.. Once again im sorry Jerry.

Have you swapped to DAC only operation on the Cambridge Audio thingy now then, Jerry?

Mmm, no! I actually prefer the sound of the Cambridge DAC with the preamp mode turned on. I use the Pure Sound L10 pre with the volume at max and control the volume from the DAC. Sounds crazy, I know, but it works for me.
