That's quite a lot of ironmongery for a pre-amp! I was wondering last night what sort of account that big power amp is giving of itself, Jerry.

A lot of transformers but actually quite minimalist!
What's your plans for the tubes Jerry? Anything exotic on the way?

Valve-wise it has 1 6n6p and 1 6z4. Both Russkie valves with, I believe, no direct equivalents although in some circuits ecc99 can sub for 6n6p. I need to check with Guy if that is so with the L10. A friendly AOSer has loaned me an allegedly 'special military grade' 6n6p and I have some 'gold grid' 6n6p on the way from Ukraine. But it sounds rather good (understatement) with the stock valves.

That's quite a lot of ironmongery for a pre-amp! I was wondering last night what sort of account that big power amp is giving of itself, Jerry. The Pass is extremely good. Martin would know what I mean if I said it was a lot like the Parasound Halo A21 I took to his place, but without the slightly rolled off, 'cumfy' character. It's high rez, very powerful and fast. The A21 was a bit of a gentle giant, the Pass X150 is rather less gentle! Compared to the Philips 380 power amp (which I still rate very highly) it has a rather more 'liquid', less stark presentation. Imaging is fuller, more 3D. There's a sense of awesome sweep to larger scale music that the Philips lacks with my speakers. It's a great amp - I'm still getting to know it but I suspect it is a stayer of similar or greater proportions than the A21 which was with me for 18 months or so. Definitely still in the honeymoon stage, I can't imagine wanting to move it on at the moment.

That describes the Pass sound very well: hi-res but it always remains coherent without ever being warm. Big dynamic swings, too. The Parasound was good and so was the Chord at the time, but I think the Pass and Belles are in a different league.
Jerry, if you thought my system was dynamic at the time...

I don't think I would want a system that was more dynamic than what I heard at your place with the Chord amp, Martin! Was it a track from the Decca Chabrier Espana that had me laughing out loud at the sheer percussive visceral SLAM of those transients? Dynamics and slam and pin you to the wall transients are all great fun and impressive - but I think there does come a point when it goes over the top and you simply wouldn't hear that at a real musical event. Great for when you have your mates round and you want to impress them, though. Martin and Justin (user211 on AOS) have a very similar appraach and objective in putting a dream system together. I prefer a somewhat more relaxed approach to music making!

It's the Fruhbeck de Burgos orchestration of Albeniz Suite Espagnola on Decca. Ah, I was almost entirely wrong then! ... I had the Spanish connection and the record label. Doesn't seem to be on Spotify.

Just sold my 2nd-system turntable. Good riddance. Never going back. Digital is by far the best solution for classical music playback, imho.

For classical, I have to agree with you Jerry. I rarely play classical vinyl now.

You will come back to vinyl Jerry. No body in there right mind will live with just Digital unless they are Young & know of nothing else. Just saying Well thanks for your diagnosis of my mental state. At well over 70 years old, I have discarded both vinyl and cd. My listening (a mix of classical and modern) is supplied these days by a mix of Qobus, Tidal and HD downloads. 5000 LP records sold some time ago along with record deck and my large cd collection sits in storage whilst I enjoy the rips on my Aurender w20. Scarlatti cd transport sits gathering dust in the attic.

Yes, my CD collection of 2000+ discs sits unused - in fact, this morning's task is to substantially downsize it - off to the charity shop with them! It's all streaming from t'internet here. Just keeping a core CD collection in case of the unexpected.

Current electronics .... (actually just trying out Imgur photo hosting ) Yay - that works. So da big boy Pass X150 power amp fed by either Pure Sound L10 or Bel Canto PRe3 preamps. Both preamps are good - I bought the L10 and put the BC up for sale, but actually I think I will keep both and swap 'em every now and then. Both are great preamps in somewhat different ways. DAC is the DAC3 by Starting Point Systems in France. Been here a while now and very happy with it. I use a Halide Bridge USB/SPDIF converter with it, even though it has a good USB input. The Halide just gives it that extra something. And top left my vintage Philips Black Tulip 270 pre and 380 power. I use the 270 as a headphone amp, and excellent it is.
