I've researched this for a week now, and I've also posted on another forum (TapeHeads.net) with nothing definitive so far.
I purchased a Nak DR-8 that's as clean as a whistle and looks barely used. This was the one of the last Nakamichi cassette models released (around 2000). From what I've gathered, the DR-8 is for all intent a Nakamichi DR-3 in parts and design, but it was made at the end of Nakamichi's run. A big part of why I desired this model.
The problem, a common one from what I've read, is that tapes made in this Nak and played on this Nak sound quite good. But, when played in anything else they sound quite bad. Not a major issue except that half the reason I bought a deck was to mix and make tapes for the car from both CDs and LPs. And so, I could live with using the DR-8 to create mixes from vinyl for play in the DR-8, and find something else (cheaper) for car tapes.
Thing is, I can't give up on problems easily! The tapes I made 30 years ago on much less of a deck (Teac 460), sound fine in the car but lousy on the Nakamichi. The opposite is also true; tapes made on the Nak sound really bad in the car, with reduced range, volume and generally dull and uninspiring. I have to crank the car deck's volume to get anywhere, and then it's a lot of noise lacking fidelity.
There are issues of IEC EQ standards, along with this, that and the other. The good folks trying to help on the other forum seem to think it's an issue - beyond design - with the DR-8. I'm not convinced since its own tapes sound great. The consensus is that tapes made in this model Nakamichi should sound acceptable in other decks.
Anyone familiar with this problem?
