Always liked top-loading players with a puck for their access and vinyl-like hands-on experience. Slot-loading - very unfulfilling by comparison. I have a Meridian 207, which is sort of half and half, as it has a draw and internal disc clamp.
Anyway, top-loaders do allow the use of a mat to damp the CD and I wondered if they really did anything.
Obviously there's many that could be mentioned. Do you have a favourite?

MartinT used to major on CD mats, and probably still does. I followed his advice and got his favourite as well as a few others to try, and yes, sq improvements were to be heard, and yes, Martin's was the best! But I guess I'm not really a 'tactile' sort of person in that way, and I got fed up with the glorious hands-on experience of fiddling with the pesky mat for each CD (back in the days before I started streaming). I stopped using the darn thing and sold it on, I just couldn't be bothered with it. I forget the type and model - I'm sure Martin can supply details! -- I probably have one or two mats at home, I'm away at the moment. Come the weekend I could check and would be happy to loan/sell if you were interested,

My Marigo mat is excellent in the Ayre. It really does make a difference to air, space and depth.

I hate CD players with a passion, however i still have a Sony Fixed Lazer Jobbie with Puck,If i were to use it again [Which hell will freeze over first] It would be hard reverting back to a standard CD tray after using this..

Sony Fixed Lazer Jobbie with Puck My Sony SCD-1 was one of those. Enormous battleship construction, too.
