i have a pioneer early 70's direct drive tt,i have just made a tonearm board from panzerholz, the stock one was plywood, ive tried solid ebony and really prefer over the 3 the panzerholz. this has got me thinking what a plinth made in it would sound like. the stock plinth is plywood sitting on a metal frame, see the cut away photo below. what do you reckon fella's good idea or better leaving it alone? i should add i used to be a cabinet maker and antique restorer so making/veneering isnt a problem for me.

I think there have been a few people on the Lenco Heaven forum who have used this for plinths and reported good results with their idler drive decks. It's pricey stuff though! I'd think there would be less to gain from simply recreating a facsimile of the original one - people have been using panzerholz in pursuit of mass, so stacked layers have been the order of the day.

Surely, surely not, for a man of your calibre.
Panzerholz? Sounds like a German tank manoeuvre.
Where did you get your Spectre mat from? In the early 80s I had a Dumpa one, which was, apparently, the last incarnation of it (Audio Ref (original), Spectre and then the Dumpa).
Quite liked it on a Thorens 160 B/Hadcock

jayman67 - do you know about Picawood? It's kind of like Panzerholz with knobs on! It's made of thinner laminations and pressed under higher pressure and for longer periods of time than Panzerholz. This makes it more dense, more dead and harder. It's almost as hard as stainless steel, in fact. Make sure you have sharp tools though!

Quite liked it on a Thorens 160 B/Hadcock i was reading about mats as my pioneer original finally died, despite the asprin/winter green oil trick so i was reading about mats and came across a site called the sound fountain, there's a good section about mats and he mention the Spectraand said it was good,i tried it in the search on ebay and one popped up in germany.....http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/ttmat.html it has totally eliminated the ring from the platter so im happy,i nearly bought an isoplatmat to,saved a few quid with the Spectra.
