I agree. We have been saying this all along. It's a pity that the chosen bit rates mentioned are so low - when you get up to 320kps cbr (constant bit rate) things get a lot less obvious. The cues are a lot more subtle but they're still there.
The only justification for MP3 I can see is if storage space is at a premium. My own personal portable library (on my phone) is AAC at 320kbps, which I prefer when compared to MP3.

Wow! The more you compress music the worse it sounds? Who'd have thought it? I really think that with today's technology and the associated cost per megabyte (Moore's law is being beaten into submission as we speak) storage space is a non-issue, or at least it should be. I do have MP3 files but most of my 'library' is in lossless FLAC format and I'm still only 72% through a 2tb Disk Station.

I only use mp3 at 320kbps for the car. It's absolutely fine for that purpose, no need for higher bitrates as you won't hear the difference.
