Wow!
I guess the only ones left now are copies of Abba Gold and The Carpenters Singles 1974-1978...

Well, the article says that lots has been taken but it has only made a small dent in the pile.

I wondered what had happened to that record collection. Pandemonium Records used to be in All Saints, Manchester, and the title suggests that it was a record shop. It wasn't as such, it was the record collection of a compulsive collector, and he wouldn't sell any of his precious collection. He would sell you an overpriced C90 cassette tape, and if you were lucky it would have a couple of LPs recorded onto it (nudge, nudge, wink , wink). A friend once bought a tape and was not impressed with the quality.
Like most major cities Manchester has seen lots of redevelopment, and the property occupied by Pandemonium changed hands, and the rent went up. New premises were acquired in Newton Heath - a cellar in an old Coop type store. I got in and saw part of the collection 20 years ago - I even found something I'd been looking for for ages, and made the guy a decent offer, which was declined. He offered to sell me a tape, and I declined.
I read a few years ago that the building had changed hands, and that the cellar got flooded out one Winter because of a pipe burst in the building above. The burst was put down to general neglect of the building. And since then I've driven past the place regularly and wondered what had happened to Pandemonium Records. It looks like the record collection never got moved.

That's the popular theory about the origin and then the final para of the article goes and casts a little doubt on that.

I'd dispute the description "record store boss" - the guy was a hoarder who never sold anything. The stuff has been uncovered in Newton Heath in a pretty well derelict building, and it doesn't take a genius to fill in the gaps. It will be the damaged "stock" from Pandemonium Records. I'll be going past there next week - I'll stop and investigate.
The building frontage is on the corner of Oldham Road and Old Church Street. Dulverton Street is the rear access to the buildings.
