Heard yesterday evening on Radio 4 that the Stones are to issue their 1960's albums in mono.
Mention of the radio, read earlier that Radio 1 has lost practically 1 million of their audience, virtually 1/10 of their total. Whereas the likes of Radio 4, 6 and Asian Networks have increased their figures.

Have you listened to Radio 1? It explains everything.

R4 for me in the mornings. The shipping forecast at 05:20 is very therapeutic while driving to work.

You can pre-order on Amazon for £120. 15 CDs. Vinyl is £336 I think.
Beatle's Mono Box set can still be had for £118. So much for the "Limited Edition" status it was given at launch.

Please enlighten an ignoramus as to why you would want them in mono, not stereo..

Because the mixes are different. They were originally intended to be heard in mono, and the stereo versions were rushed out to fulfil a sudden demand for stereo.
With The Beatles recordings the whole group would attend the mono mix mastering - with the stereo versions it was left to George Martin and Geoff Emerick. George Martin himself preferred the mono version, stating that they'd "been painted with finer brushstrokes".

Some people REALLY DON'T LIKE "hard (core!) panning". Me, I'd rather have it then mono. I've compared Beatle's early tracks in mono to the hard panned versions, and I'd rather have the latter - most of the time. There is the odd exception.

Must admit play 50/60s recordings on a dedicated mono set-up as they sound much better with a 0.7mil mono stylus mono - cartridge , Sut & Phono stage 100% of records mastered by the band in mono , beatles , stones , beach boys etc & once the left the engineers created a stereo mix & 9 times out of ten a bad one mono carts have no vertical movement & you really do not hear them at there best with a stereo cartridge + any decent phono stage has a mono switch fitted as stndard as a 2nd option & hate that awful hard panned sound
Great mono can & does sound stunning , plus buckets of truly stunning mono remasters coming out recently
