Thank you for your reply. I have 2 sources that they only have coax out. In order to use with Caiman SEG, is it ok to use rca splitter plug. You would need a RCA switch of some sort. There RCA switch boxes on ebay from very cheap to very expensive. Is there such a thing as a coax to optical converter? If so, would it help here? Yes. Yes. Ok, I found a RCA switch. Then I find coax to optical converter. And I get confused. Which one should I use to get a better sound quality.

You need only one or the other. You can either switch between two co-ax feeds into one input or convert co-ax into the optical input. The latter is perhaps the more elegant solution as you need only use the Caiman for input switching.

Or buy both and get yourself another source component!

Just purchased the new Caiman SEG from Stan which replaced my Caiman 11 , my main logic was to use the SEG as a pre amp directly into my Avondale S100 power amp allowing me to take my Lightspeed attenuator out of the system as I use cd as my main listening source . I previously tried the Caiman 11 directly into the power amp but the improvements to the preamp stage done by Stan with the SEG have to my ears improved the already excellent results and taken the sound signature onto another level. The main area of improvement is the ability to delve deeper into recordings with an extra degree of clarity and instrument separation retaining the analogue sound and bringing out nuances in the mix I had not heard before ( using in mode 3 ) This new Caiman SEG is for me a keeper and another winner from the Beresford stable , a real bargain given the modest cost !

Currently running my unit from a rechargeable Anker battery 12V , as the new SEG is now capable of accepting up to 15V does anyone have experience of comparing a 15V Linear power supply against battery power ?

When using caiman seg as a pre amp to connect power amp, does it have an analog volume control or digital ?

It looks to me like an analogue control, but Stan here should be able to confirm.

Analogue, surely?

It looks like a standard pot with buffers either side and is unlikely to be used as a volume encoder for direct DAC control. The SQ would be horrible at low volumes.

It is an analogue volume control.

I bought an ebay ADC for around £10 and the amount of hiss it generated made it unlistenable. I suspected the PS, but no doubt you can put me right.

Did you feed the ADC with a line level signal?

Some people have been having problems in locating the expanced USB instructions for the Caiman. The link is at www.beresford.me/downloads/CAIMAN%20WASAPI%20Mode%20REV6.pdfThe AIFF driver to play back 352.8KHZ etc PCM files is in the driver section of my website. JRiver will play AIFF and DSD64 through the Caiman once you follow the setup. I am not a Foobar person, so I haven't yet figured out the settings for DSD etc. Mediamonkey can play AIFF, but please note that it takes a bit of time for the audio data to travel between PC and DAC due to the far larger file size. So you might get a bit of music break up for the first 10 seconds of a 258.2KHZ file. I found out that if you put MM in PAUSE mode for a few seconds, that then gives MM some valuable time to load up, decode the file, and send the data to the Caiman. In order for MM to be able to "see" 358.2KHZ PCM files you need to follow the download instructions for the driver on my website. Unfortunately I do have a DSD compatible file recognizer for MM that does not work properly yet. Work in progress. Loads of demo files on the net to check out AIFF and DSD.

Having been generally wowed by running the Caiman SEG on battery power, I thought I'd separate out power for the Raspberry Pi and leave that running from my current battery. I've therefore ordered a 12V Yuasa lead-acid battery and trickle charger. This should power the SEG for several days so I need only setup the trickle charger to top up for about an hour early morning on a standard timer. I hope to unleash even more sound quality. So far, in Mode 3, it sounds superb.

I bought two segs. Got them yesterday.
My son is running his off a mac with optical into croft pre/power the into electric beach frugels.
I initially had it attatched to my tq claymore and spendor sp1s on av duty. Watched a few bits and bobs (no country for old men/dark knight).
Removed it and plumbed into my main system another tq claymore hotroded by Colin Wonfor the man himself. I use 57s with supertweeters. I run my 12v stuff off a car battery.
Initial impressions with less than 12 hours on it are that its excellent.
The tq has a really good usb dac and really good class a headphone section so thats my benchmark.
Tried the cans this morning senn 700s.
Reckon the seg is playing in the same league.
My son had a mate round last night-same take as me, the seg is something special.
Will endevour to provide Stan with some liquid pay back.
Im delighted so is my son.
Again, im a long standing customer of stan no connections to the man but count him as a good friend as he helped me years ago set up a battery rig sending me connections and advice free of charge.
Very fine dac-great value for money-great head phone section for cans users.
Thanks Stan.

Nice one, Tony.
Have you set the Mode to 4 (three flashes of the LED) yet? You need to do it for each input.
