Just taken delivery of the latest Peter Gabriel vinyl reissues of his albums ‘So’, ‘Us’ and ‘Up’. They are genuine things of beauty; I don’t pretend to know what a half-speed remaster on 180gram vinyl can truly offer. However it did get me thinking, if this level of sound quality can be achieved on vinyl, then is a great deal of the stuff we are spending our hard-earned on sub-standard? The albums were about the same price as any new vinyl release, but are very clearly superior in sound quality (at least on my system). Surely every record we buy now should be at this level?

I find (new) vinyl to be considerably more expensive than CD now. It has to be special for me to buy it, so my volume of vinyl purchases has gone way down and I pick carefully. Quality can be great but sometimes it's nothing special.

I had the first 4 PG titles they did and they needed a thorough RCM clean to remove noise. The digital mastering while OK was harsh in places and certainly short of the Classic Records analogue sourced issues from a few years back. They are however very keenly priced. I doubt these are the peak of 45 rpm releases. I suggest trying those from Analogue Productions and MFSL. Unfortunately being US imports they are getting rather pricey. The Dylan and Doors 45 rpms are great as well as Brothers In Arms.

I'm about to order the previous 4 reissues, so will see if I have the same issue.

Don't forget these are half speed mastered as well as 45rpm - plus you get the hi-res download to boot. Bit of a bargain really. I have the original Up and Us albums on vinyl, and Us definitely doesn't feel as substantial as this release!

PG remasters are terrible compared to the AAA Classics & the originals half-speed mastering from tape done AAA all analogue is sublime from the likes of AP & MFSL half-speed mastering from files is marketing BS

AP and MFSL are pretty much out there on their own for what they do - but then at £30-60, you pay for that.
