Even Yellow Brick Road? The intro on Funeral for a Friend is not bad at all. Strange you should say that, as I have the high res download (24/96) of YBR and it's one of the worst albums - most tracks sound very harsh to my ears. I'll have to listen again to that track. Just listened to the album again and I stand by what I said - on my system the whole album sounds harsh, as if the treble had been boosted to make the piano stand out. For example, about 3.5 minutes into 'funeral for a friend' not only is the piano bad, but the instruments behind it sound so 'trebly' that they're almost distorted. Perfectly prepared to accept it's my system or my hearing, but I don't have the problem on most albums, or maybe it's only the high res version thats been really badly produced.

Ok, I just played Funeral for a Friend again wondering if my memory had failed me. This is the early double CD set made in West Germany by PDO and it's not heavily compressed because of the high volume level I could set (generally higher than many hopelessly crushed modern releases). The opening is atmospheric, syth is crisp and the bass very nicely done, then the piano enters, very subtle with some nicely tapped cymbal. There is real depth there. The build up is good, syth re-enters with more urgency and it all gets busy in a satisfying way. His piano sounds like his piano from many recordings, I don't know what it is but I think it's derived from his playing style. This recording is not harsh or overly bright, I would say it's a pretty good rock recording overall. Candle in the Wind is good, too.
I'm just not hearing what you're hearing!
