Do you choose something in keeping with your mood? Or to counter your mood? Do you pick a genre or do you have a specific artist in mind? Do you mix genres in one session? Do things that happen influence your choice on that day?

Music selection seems to flollow a pattern for me, bad day something moody, heavy and alive any genre, great day and anything that helps le gthen the good feelings
With friends just talking about musical experiences leafs on a journey of exploration either way music feeds the soul

I tend to follow my mood a bit: Upsetting day and on goes the Mahler, happy day and something much more upbeat, like Dire Straits. I don't really have much truly happy music because the best music in my opinion has some angst in it.
I very often follow a trail of one piece leading to another and it can easily cross genres. Saying that, if I start with some choral music like a Requiem, then more choral tends to follow.
Sometimes I want something fresh and will pick at random a disc I haven't played in years.
With friends it's different and I try to accommodate their likes.

I really don't think about it, I just play what catches my eye when I browse through my app, or if it's a new purchase. You guys think too mutt!. I'm in Thailand listening to Andra Day sat in the Thai Airways lounge drinking a white Russian, seems a good mix for the moment

Usually something kickstarts my choices - might be something mentioned in conversation or maybe on TVs and I think I'll have a wee listen to that. Other times I know exactly what I want to hear and other times I'm on the hunt for something new so it's off to Tidal discover or the what you've been listening to recently thread.

or the what you've been listening to recently thread Yes, I forgot to mention that: I love listening to other people's recent music, I have discovered some little gems that way over the years. Sharing music is good!

And in the "too anal for words" category
I have 3 listening queues Office - the latest CD arrivals get played in order of arrival until I have had enough, then into the next queue Breakfast diner, same again, then to the next queue Main system, same again with super favourites hanging around and being used a lot for new kit Then there's the LPs. I go through all I hae by one artist every now and again Plus I get diverted with "ooh must hear that again"
I will be sorting the main system library of CDs and LPs sometime to be all together and then can access artists or types as I fancy

Mood generally has a impact on what I listen to. Blues is really not good if I'm are having a sombre day but when I am feeling good then a great Blues album can be quite refreshing.
I have my favourites which get played the most but I do like to dabble in new music so usually by a few albums each month to try out...
