I might be slowing down. I'm settled on speakers, and have been for over 4 years now - or is it 5? - although it was a real wrench to leave the speaker swapping behind me, I did enjoy it a lot. With the arrival of my vintage Technics CDP it's maybe just amps and cables now, although maybe the amp situation also now seems stable. Frankly, it's a bit worrying!

My addiction is to DIY building of valve amplifiers. I have built and dismantled around thirty in the last nine years. However I just recycle bits from one amp to another, so it is not too costly in terms of transformers. It's valves that are the cost element, but I'm weaning myself off this behaviour, as I have found something that satisfies my audio needs and matches the sound I have internalised over the years, as the sound that hi-fi amps should make. What I have ended up with is far from fashionable in the DIY valve amp world. It is push-pull (oh dear) Class A/B (even worse) Pentode operation (you cannot be serious) But is does it for me and could have possibly cured my addiction. (I've had it four months and the itch to change is completely absent)

I would suggest a short stay in rural France for some recouperation and injection of some proper music with some proper speakers but then that might just completely cure the need to swap stuff and we can't have that. Hope things improve

Its catching certainly. In only the last twenty five years I've changed both the amplifier AND the phono amp. Its the financial cost that is so crippling.

Good to see you here. Not.

Get out of bed the wrong sde? How on earth could you take that in any other way than was intended. If you mistook that for anything other than good humour, you have been influenced by happenings elsewhere. Good to see you here too Gerry.

Why is this thread restricted to people without backbones?

Oh dear - looks like I took it the wrong way. Gordon has a go at my hifi, my taste in music (with not a smilie in sight) and then rolls his eyes at the fun I have boxswapping ... ah well, all in a day's work on a forum!
Nice to see you here, too, Gordon.

Nice to see you here, too, Gordon. Wrong on all counts Gerry, I was doing no such thing. Maybe you should try and recognise irony when you see it. However, check out my thread on new starts. You will notice that I have apologised already for the misunderstanding.

You need to use smilies more, Gordon - make it plain when humour is intended, when we don't know each other personally a lot of stuff can be taken the wrong way otherwise.

I've only got one box (I think) that was built in the last ten years and it's a bit of an oddball... Most of my gear is from the '80s and '90s. That avatar looks suspiciously like an Aleph 3. I've been wanting to try one for years, mind you my Monarchy Audio Class A power amps are pretty damn good. It is an Aleph 3. Not mine in the pic but I do have one running a pair of Snell Cs at the moment. It does get pretty toasty

I took it as a humorous post Jerry (in fact it made me chuckle), but I have got used to Gordan's (occasional) acerbic wit, which I actually enjoy - but I used to take some thing's the wrong way - one of the dangers of a keyboard and a screen, some things only work with a glass of wine in hand, a few toons playing and a wry smile Nice to see those ducks too, feels kind of soothing for some strange reason.

I see that I need to tune into Gordon's wit - so he's not really a dogmatic, narrow minded audio and music fascist?
Well, that's good news!
--- appropriate use of smilies would assist the unenlightened though.

The one thing that I find it hard to tolerate is intolerance.
