I listen to a lot of USB served music. Have close to 1TB of music. I also want to watch Online TV, particularly TennisTV:) can only be done via a browser at the moment and Edge works best by far and a way! Both things needed in the music loft/man cave, perhaps even simultaneously occasionally. Or a film and sound over the stereo.
I'm using my laptop for this at the moment, but its a bit of a chore plugging in and transporting to lounge and so on.
I have good WiFi and cat6 lan also.
Would there be a good compact, better than a laptop solution? I'm not abreast of latest offerings that could do this short of thing. What do you guys use / recommend?

Well for this exact same purpose (as well as streaming movies to my tablet) I have just bought an ASUS E402MA laptop for £129.00 on offer from Ebuyer. I used to use a small server in the UK, but I can put a 2TB drive in the ASUS for music and movies and the O/S Windows 10, will go on the internal 32GB flash drive. Easy to use for admin of files etc, but small enough to be out of the way. I'll only have JRiver music centre software on it, which covers all my bases.
I'll also put a VPN on for Internet TV like the iPlayer etc, can't wait to get it, as it's sat in the UK at the moment.

DO you mean something like this www.roku.com/en-gb/products/roku-2 you can use to watch online TV and movies Also modern blue ray players are good for this. You can stream a lot of TV (no Kodi with this option)and will play music from files costs can very from a cheap Sony to a something like a Oppo. Via a good DAC you can get decent sounds too Lots of other similar products around too

Hmm, I did check out Roku a while ago (2 years), and back then it would not support a browser streaming tennistv type of service. Perhaps it can now? Still need a USB output to go to my I2S WaveIO converter and into Najda DAC/XO/DSP. I've heard about compact little pc's, guess the tv screen can be the monitor and I guess it could always be on for quick start up. I suppose ideally a SSD, but over 1TB - are they that big now? Need to research them but wondered if there was something better?

Plenty of external SSD that are 1tb or over Why not just get a new laptop for the room I no idea if the roku will support a browser streaming Tennis TV but should support Kodi so might be worth checking out www.tvaddons.ag/livetv-march2016/

Another laptop is a possibility - I'd have 3 then . I've been looking at mini-pc's but perhaps there are no advantages and they are not portable in the same way as a laptop.
