Not sure what the heck I've done but I bought a used one of these on EBay. It's a 2tb one about 4 yrs old. Im hoping to transfer my CDs onto it and play back via a DAC. I know you can use Android phone and IPhone (so presumably iPad too) as a remote. I also read you can send your iTunes library from your computer to the Vortexbox too. Handy if I can as it saves me re-copying about 300cds already on iTunes and it will hopefully give me the few iTunes purchases I have. Of course if it's loads of hassle I can just manually copy them again. My question is just how "plug and play" are these things and will I need to download software other than some form of remote app? i guess it can probably do other things, so pray tell if you know of any other handy uses. Doorstop doesn't count. Nor does frisbee although that fate has befallen a few bits of tech that have annoyed me in the past. I'm usually pretty hostile towards anything that brings IT hassles and I generally don't tolerate anything that is less than seamless. I got it at a good price so I can always move it on without loss if it's not my bag. Any speculation on whether it makes it past the first weekend will be worth a chuckle, so please feel free

Always considered using a Vortexbox but never got around to it, as my knowledge of Linux is very limited. I know I could pick it up if I wanted to, but was always happy with JRiver in my system.
The big thing I don't like about machines that automatically rip discs is the errors they often make identifying them correctly and getting the artwork and track listings right. I'm fussy about that, it has to be spot on and all my artwork is a good quality 900 x 900 image, mostly scanned from the original.
Keep us informed as it will be interesting to see how you get on?

I'm fussy about tagging errors too, and use Mp3Tag to amend things if I don't spot the errors when I'm ripping discs. I use dBPoweramp to rip CDs, and I just use the freedb database as a basic lookup facility. There's no reason why you can't use Windows machines to access the data on the Vortexbox to correct errors.

Mp3Tag is very good for tagging, as is dBPoweramp for ripping. I correct any tag errors in JRiver, but there are numerous ways to do it on a Windows machine as Chris says.

Your Vortexbox should announce itself on your network, and you should be able to address it via a web browser, or browse for music using a software media player. You should also be able to see it in Windows Explorer - I'd expect the same with Mac OS too, which means you should be able to amend incorrect tags and what have you.

I've considered a Vortexbox type setup several times, but as I'm a really lazy bugger the thought of ripping my CD collection puts me off, plus I like handling CDs.
Everyone I know who has Vortexbox (purchased or home made) seems to like what it does, so go for it.

I've a Vortexbox loaded with Slimserver (Logitech Media Server) and hooked up to an IMac. I use an Ipad running Squeezepad to access the libary. It's pretty much been a breeze. Sure, the odd rip doesn't get the tags / artwork spot on (but many, many do) but there are plenty of editors you can use to sort those. Keeping tags in order is, frankly, just a fact of life and takes some time at the beginning, but I rarely edit tags now. Ripping CDs is a cinch - usually 3 mins or so - just pop it in and hey presto - all done (you can configure where to store the copy, playback quality, volume settings etc). As I often work from home I just kept a stack of discs next to me and kept popping them in. Wouldn't be without it (though now wondering if there is a better replacement - I think mine can handle blu-ray etc software wide but I'd need a BD drive. Then again I've never got involved with trying to rip BD discs

Now running LMS on my Imac so Vortexbox now surplus to requirements. Only rip a CD very, very occasionally so the extra faf that involves is manageable. VB now for sale and I will bring it along to the ASBO if anyone is interested.

About the same as a Grecian urn i suspect. Not really sure as there are not vast numbers around. Current models start at about £400 I think. See my FS ad . . .
