I much prefer to see a performance in a small venue. I hate stadia and arenas with a passion and will only go to them as a last resort. But that's just me. So which are the best music venues around?

I spent a lot of my 20s and 30s in small music venues and like you Chris much prefer the intimacy of a smaller venue. Looking back they were probably dives i remember if you stood to long in the same spot at the Marquee you feet would stick to the spot a bit. But it was never about comfort it was more about being close to the band and being captured by the energy of the event

I like The Anvil in Basingstoke. Good venue, relatively good sound.
I remember the Marquee not in a good light!

Lots of good times were to be had at the Marquee and Dingwalls. Around that time, I was also enjoying gigs at The Escape Club and the Zapp Club in Brighton, also The Concorde Club for great jazz. Rock City was good in Nottingham and Barrowlands in Glasgow, where the crowd are mad!
I go to The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal for a lot of gigs in the Malt Room, which is pretty quirky, with pillars everywhere and a really low ceiling and I've also really enjoyed The Picturedrome in Holmfirth, which is a beautiful old building with a great atmosphere.

The Town & Country Club in Kentish Town was the scene of my favourite gigs for many years.
Oh, and Union Chapel in Islington is a lovely place for gigs.
