Flitting round the internet I came across a website - tudou - showing CD player transports in action, up close and, er, personal. As I think it is a Chinese/Japanese website I've no idea what the website is about but the video's of CD player's laser's in action are fun(?) to watch as they show just how wobbly and bouncy things can get during CD playback. First up is this one, a Sony KSS-273B: www.tudou.com/programs/view/sG_hM0QEX_0/From around 3 mins 10 seconds onwards the poor old laser gets a bit of a bumpy ride. The sound seems unaffected but I suppose it shows that beneath that quiet exterior of a CD player, things can get a bit lively. This one is even more bouncy: www.tudou.com/programs/view/grilr7ebno4/Then we get this, a Sony CDP-557 ES drive loosely sat at an angle on a spring playing what looks to be a really ropey disc: www.tudou.com/programs/view/OegWuD6CUi8/Is the kind of laser movement evident in the above videos typical or is the video poster just showing examples of CD transports which are not in the best of health? If this sort of movement IS the norm and you think how small the lumps and bumps are on a CD that have to be 'read' and that lasers can do this - so I have been told - for around 16000 hours of CD playback, well, it's bloody amazing and a tribute to the expertise of the people who design these machines that they can take so much abuse. I always imagined that inside a CD player the compact disc was serenely spinning around nice and smoothly with the laser just sat there motionless spitting out its tiny beam of light.

The focus mech is very busy with most discs in most players. I used to have a video Laserdisc player and at the rate that discs were spun I was amazed that it could track anything at all!

Be patient - that site is *very* slow indeed!
