House moving is one of the more interesting ones to do in life lol
However one of the biggets bugbears for me are the utility's especially the phone.
Every-time we have moved in the last 10 years the hassle we have had with phone companies is unbelievable, not that the others are much better.
Where are you looking to move to Martin?

We are looking in the outer Basingstoke area, Tony. Small villages etc. As long as there is easy access to the M3 so that we can both get to work.

19 UK homes in 29 years and I'm putting this one on the market very soon. My longest home is 4 years. We moved lots when I was a kid too. I get bored when a house is renovated and I don't like living in it and seeing things get tired.

Make sure you have checked the loft space before you move there might be that rare and valuable piece of equipment you have forgotten about? Don't envy you the moving experience but good luck and happiness

Thanks, Ron, getting ready to move house is a nightmare, but at least I have done a lot already. Thankfully all my old gear is in the garage rather than in the loft. Even so, there is enough crap there that I probably still need a skip as some items are too big to take to the dump.
There is still the main system to pack, a job I don't relish (but I do have most of the boxes).

I haven't in detail, Mike. Thing is, it might take 3 or so journeys for all my stuff, compared with one for a removal van. Also, I can no longer lift heavy things.

I remember I put all my system to one side before we moved
The quite good removers stuffed an Isobarik grille to use as packing
Assume the worst and plan around it for the system even if it costs extra dough

We tried to view a few properties on sale through online estate agent sales. All pretty rubbish tbh.
Hard to contact, not connecting with seller etc.
Utilities were not bad for us.
Our next door neighbour went with BT. We went with EE. It took them 4 months to get a line / Broadband.
It took us less than 1 month and we had Xmas etc in the middle.
We used an EE 4G to WiFi gizmo with 100GB of data on it. That was brilliant.
Removal companies were a bit difficult.
If there is plenty of notice I'm sure they are ok but we had a moving target date and the company we'd plumped for let us down.
Our agent recommend a firm that had helped them out at short notice before and they were great.
Solicitors, all seem slow and not very communicative. I guess they have 100 other clients and you get 100th of their time!
Do your own research. Land searches don't seem to find much.
In our experience Surveyors are a mixed bag, even the home buyers is overpriced for what they turn up. Ok my dad is a chartered building surveyor so we know what's what, but seeing what our buyers surveyor did for our house was amusing.
As said before, covenants and chancel repair liability are the latest ways for solicitors to make a little bit more money, seems to me...

I have become a conveyancing tart on the basis that all solicitors are, as you said, slow. Estate agents are a real mixed bag - I've landed on Carson & Co. and they have done a good job so far, including the all-important feed into Rightmove and Zoopla. They are taking care, as of a visit today, that they have all the facts to sell on to prospective viewers, too.
I'll take your advice on asking the agent about removals. The last company arrived at my new house and started criticising everything they could see about it, right in front of me. I uttered some not-quite-under-my-breath views on their lack of professionalism. They can take a jump.

Trust no one
Recommendations are only what other people think. Possibly what they get as a back hander. Treat as a rough guide.
I've been recommended people and companies that were not up to scratch - as well as good ones
Get the commision rate reduced from the agents. Ask all the 'professionals' how they communicate (email, carrier pigeon) and how long they take to answer.
Finding the good ones is so difficult when the bad ones say the same but never do what they say
