We need a thread on the pros and cons of mullet systems!
Mullet systems? Well, any system that has a seemingly gross imbalance in the cost of its components. I am thoroughly entranced by 2 versions of my current system, as follows, with (rrp/price paid) in brackets .... - Wyred4Sound DAC1 (£1500/£380) feeding an Inca Tech Claymore integrated amp (£600/£180) and even better! ... - Xiang Sheng DA-01A (£100 + import / £75) feeding a Yarland FV34ciii amp (£500/£119) all feeding into my MBL 116F speakers (£23k now / £13k) -- aka my Dream Speakers Yes, I've had multi-£k sources and amps, lots of them, but I am absolutely convinced that the systems listed above sound the best ever with my Dream Speakers. Yes, it seems crazy to me as well. Anyone else have similar experiences?

The nearest I can come is when I use my Beresford Caiman-II DAC (£199) from RPi, Blu-ray and Sky HD. It's so good I still can't believe the detail and presentation I get from it.
That feeds a Pass Labs preamp (£5.7k), Belles power amp (£5.5k) and Usher Be-20 speakers (£16k now, £11k then).

Sounds a bit fishy to me.
Well somebody was going to say it sooner or later.

My sole source of interconnect are Van Damme in place of expensive ones. The bass is firm and I once rewired my dory with it (sold it now).

I have had a couple of good Mullet systems. One was a Musical Fidelity A1 driving Townshend Glastonburys. It did a better job than the Kelvin labs preamp and monos that Max Townshend recommended.
Another success was a Micromega Leader and Pioneer A400x driving Spica Angelus. The speakers we're so good that they were exceptional even with cheap kit.
