A friend of mine wants to get a second-hand turntable for under £100 that isn't terrible. Any recommendations of models that are worth her looking at will be much appreciated

I am a bit out of touch but you still might be able to get a Lenco G75 or 78 for that money. It may require a bit of tender loving care but you can really taake this quite far without to much money

Most Lencos go for about £130 or a bit more nowadays. I'd be looking out for an AR EB-101 myself - you can still just about find the odd one for that sort of lolly. It sounds good, it's uncomplicated and spares are easy to find. Also it'll take a really good arm if the owner should be so inclined at a later date.

Sony direct drives? My main concern at that price would be the age and condition of the stylus - many on ebay are described as "original needle" ! /stored in garage/loft - don't want to risk mangling your vinyl for the sake of a few quid.

I think it's an impossible task. Any CD player would outperform it...............
I'll get my coat !

You can't get anything much in decent condition for £100. If this is to include cartridge and arm I think a tall order. Should be able to get a Dual 505 or a 40 year old Garrard like 86SB and squeeze in a budget AT or vintage shure with new stylus. I believe Dave (DSJR) has an 86SB and I owned one myself. Might be able to get a PL12D or the later JVC JLA1 (much rarer). All these are getting on and might need a little TLC but were well built. I think Lenco and Technics DD are too popular to get a good example below £150-£200.

A bit of patience and not just thinking Ebay is the only possible marketplace will pay off eventually, I think.

Maybe so, but maybe not. I often hear about people who have their old record collections stored in the loft or garage with nothing to play them on and I have at least two colleagues who I can think of that dumped their record decks in the mid nineties or so but kept the records. The Ebay record section is chock full of people finally getting rid of 'all those old records' and that is surely how the second hand record dealers get their stock and have been doing so for decades - buying them from people who no longer are able to play them?

Yup, that'll be me, dispute owning a 401 and Techy 1210, both of which never ran and both of which I have now sold!

My Son has a good condition Pioneer PL12D (condition includes the finish of the plinth and cover) he would be happy to sell within a £100 budget. I can't specifically speak for him on this so I would need to consult him on a deal. What I can say is I absolutely know the history of this deck as it was owned by my parents from new and then moved onto my son on their death. In consequence, I know it has had very little use from new to the present time and could be a steal of a buy if your friend is so inclined. I would expect it needs a new belt by now, although my son may well have replaced this previously. It has the original arm. I'm not sure on the cartridge, but I suspect something like, or even a Shure M75ED which, considering the relatively low use, I would expect to still be useable.
If your friend is interested, please PM me.

I know mental isn't it, I reckon 50% of those were second hand though. Got quite a haul on RSD and any gig I have been to this year where they have had LPs, I've bought them. And as you know I go to a few gigs!
