I was driving down from Manchester a couple of weeks ago and was listening to Sara Cox’s ‘Sounds of the 80’s’ on the radio; a very entertaining show for those of us with lots of youthful memories from this era.
She played an ‘extended mix’ of Cry Wolf by A-ha, and this reminded me how much I used to love 12” singles in the 80’s and 90’s. There’s something special about making a song longer, but doing it in an interesting and creative way. This gave rise to the art of the re-mix and superstar producers like Jellybean Benitez and David Morales etc etc
I’ve recently starting buying old 12” singles again - I just love putting them on the deck, you don’t get any filler, just one brilliant song and sound quality wise they invariably sound amazing and give your system a real work-out.
This is the A-ha tune that got me thinking about all this again - anyone else enjoy a good 12 incher??

I love a good 12" single like Chris Rea's Road to Hell or Yello's The Race. Brilliant dynamic sound.
What I like considerably less is when some no-name 'DJ' takes a good song and applies a senseless dance beat to it. I have a 12" of some useless twat mauling Peter Gabriel with inappropriate bass beats and then having the gall to allow his name to be published. 'Tokes' something?

My entire vinyl collection is made up of 12" singles they sound so superior to LP's so much so an LP will never ever see my TT again.

I don't own all that many, but one of my favourites is this one played very loud.

Do you remember when IOU by Freeez came out back in 1983?
That was pretty much state of the art back then, punters used to go mad for the 12" and all the stereo fx in it ... Love all the BMX bikes and body poppin' in the vid!

12" I love
Prophetic Four - as dub assasins Rema Rema - Wheel in the roses ImpLOG - Holland Tunnel Dive Underworld - Dark and Long Was not was - Tell me that I'm dreaming Kevin Harrison - Views of the Rhine DOSE / Mark E Smith - Plug myself in
The fat, total sound of a 12" takes some beating
Only problem is how soon I have to go back to the deck

I'm slightly obsessed with buying 12" singles from the 80s. Some absolute gems of extended mixes, for me captured best by New Order and Pet Shop Boys.

I've just ordered 'I'm not scared' by 7th Wonder with Patsy Kensit on vocals. Do you know it? Another superb Pet shop Boys production...

I also have some of the Dusty Springfield and Liza Minnelli 12" singles that they produced.

I am cleaning a few at a time currently and to me the sound quality cannot be beaten as you hinted at. There are too many good ones to mention but 1980's funk, soul and house did it for me.

That reminds me I've still got rather a large 80's soul and funk vinyl collection gathering dust at mum's home ... Lots of classic 12"s - I'm going to take a look when I go to visit this weekend.
