One of the first African-American composers. He was so obviously a lovely guy, once you know something about him. A staunch civil rights campaigner, but entirely peaceful, his lifelong mission to bring people together through music. From Wiki ... He was the first African-American to conduct a major American symphony orchestra, the first to have a symphony (his first symphony) performed by a leading orchestra, the first to have an opera performed by a major opera company, and the first to have an opera performed on national television. He is often referred to as "the Dean" of African-American composers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Grant_StillI'd like to introduce you to his music via two pieces - his 1st symphony and his suite for violin and piano, both wonderful pieces of music, an easy blend of classical and blues / jazz. The 1st symphony ... The 1st symphony on YouTube ... And the violin suite ... Sorry Julian, I suspect you may have a hard time finding anything by him on vinyl!

Not keen I'm afraid Jerry, It's neither one thing nor t'other. Symphony #1 reminds me of a second rate Gershwin. The Suite for Violin & Piano perks things up a bit but not enough to make me want to explore his work further.

I thought Gershwin, too. It just doesn't hold my attention.

Ah well. I guess I will just have to enjoy it in isolation! A Gershwin comparison never even occurred to me - it's just a different kind of musical animal as far as I am concerned. And I'll take Still over Gershwin pretty much every time anyway. -- ?? - perhaps Gershwin is jazz plus a bit of classical, while Still is classical plus a bit of jazz? I suppose I'm coming from a viewpoint that generally dislikes jazz, so a gentle jazzy infusion into a classical mould works well for me. -- the orchestral work gets a "very nice", while I'd give the violin and piano suite a "bloody amazing" rating. No problem. Carry on as you were.

I thought it was a bit film score-like - long passages where I didn't feel like it was going anywhere much, not really my cuppa at all. On your scale of 1-5, I gave it a Yuck!
