I wonder which pop singles you might think were closest to perfect examples of the art for you? The 'for you' part is key because, for this thread, commercial success is not necessarily relevant, so it doesn't matter if it only sold five copies. On the other hand if it sold squillions, then that's fine too. I expect full use of YouTube etc for this one!

I rarely listen to pop but I do have a few that I love This is just stunning in some ways breaks all the rules and created some new rules It is one of the few songs I can remember all the lyrics This one may surprise people but a great song Another one with a great vocal performance Tina just belts it Epic
The Moody Blues Knights in White Satin is a slow burner, beautiful and epic at the same time The Beatles Hey Jude Last but not least is Jeff Buckley Lover ou should've come over Not sure it was released as a single but as close to perfection as it gets for me Mournful yet within that a sense of hope

For pure pop, my fave is Bonnie Tyler (sorry! ) -- the 1st track just EXPLODES with excitement, and what a great voice she had! Play them LOUD ! and Fantastic sound quality, too.

I do have a love for some of the better 80's pop stuff ...
Never a Simple Minds fan, but this is an absolute favourite, from a classic film too ...
Thompson Twins - 'Doctor Doctor'
Talk Talk - 'Life's what you make it'

From the 60s there are many that set the stage for the future as there had been none like it before.
Almost anything by the Beatles, Hendrix, Animals, Four Tops, Sam and Dave, Otis, Temptations and on and on
then we changed tack and most went albummy

Yes, but... Chris asked to name the ones you think were closest to perfection. With YouTube links.

No hesitation, straight to this one. Apart from anything else it's probably the 'sexiest' record I own. And this one, perfectly in and of it's time The Ruts - Babylon's Burning. And this one, just for Jim Cregan's guitar solo And...I'd better stop now.

And this one, just for Jim Cregan's guitar solo No, actually, for the whole thing. Make Me Smile has got to be one of the all-time great singles. Just fab!
