I'm interested in how each member rates your own system, and where you will put the greatest effort into making improvements. This combines an honest appraisal of how your system performs at the moment, and what you want from it in terms of sound.
Each rating is on a scale of 1 to 9 with a centre performance rating at 5. This is not a bad to good scale, it's purely subjective for you.
1. Tonal Neutrality (1 is very cool, 9 is very warm)
2. Bass extension (1 is very light, 9 is very heavy)
3. Treble extension (1 is limited, 9 is very 'hot')
4. Vocal or midrange quality (1 is recessed, 9 is pronounced)
5. Dynamics or slam (1 is quite flat, 9 is very dynamic)
6. Soundstaging (1 is quite flat, 9 is very dimensional)
7. Power or ability to go loud (1 is limited, 9 goes as loud as you ever want)
8. Detail or resolution (1 misses detail, 9 is highly resolving)
9. Coherence or flow (1 is muddled, 9 is musical strands are easy to follow)
------------------------------------------------------------
10. what would you try most to improve?

Here's my scoring:
1. Tonal Neutrality: 4 (slightly cool of neutral) 2. Bass extension: 7 (with my ports stuffed) 3. Treble extension: 5 4. Vocal or midrange quality: 6 (everything I do is with good vocal quality in mind) 5. Dynamics or slam: 8 (very little to improve here) 6. Soundstaging: 5 (good but could be better) 7. Power or ability to go loud: 9 (I don't need any more power) 8. Detail or resolution: 7 (recent improvements up from 6) 9. Coherence or flow: 7 (recent improvements up from 5)
10. I would like to put the system in a bigger room to allow it to breath and improve the soundstaging.

I would need to remove myself from this thread as mine starts at '11' said the long haired blond guitarist in the corner

Currently the room is limiting factor which I would say rates a 4, next year a big change is due so I will be able to re evaluate that rating.

What a interesting means of measurement scale Martin 1 Tonal neutrality 5 (in the last few months the system has developed a bit more warmth) 2 Bass extension is about 7 If bass quality 9 3 Treble extension 5 4 Not sure with this I guess 5 5 Slam 9 6 Soundstage 7 7 Ability to go loud 9 8 Resolution 8 9 Coherence 7 to 8 10 My system needs a bigger room too . I might go fully active or go back to pre and power so I can use the TT again or add AMT drivers In other words not really clear. I usually get inspired when I hear something that makes a real difference like Tony's server For me hard to be objective in this as it is easy to get used to your own sound and not hear it faults so probably better for others to judge

Very much like this suggested way of measuring our systems, so here goes with mine... 1. Tonal Neutrality (7-8) - Exposure amplification is pretty well know for it's warmth and mine are no exception. 2. Bass extension (7-8) - With my new(ish) Focal's I prefer the plugs out and the bass extension is impressive. 3. Treble extension (7) - The Beryllium treble units on the Focal's are rather special. 4. Vocal or midrange quality (5) - Very well balanced overall sound in the vocal department, if anything this is what the system and particularly the Focal's excel with. 5. Dynamics or slam (6) - The combination of the warm Exposure and detailed (for want of a better term) Focal's manage this area well. 6. Soundstaging (4-5) - Better with the Focal's than the Epos but still a little limited, think this is more to do with the room and positioning, to be entirely honest the speakers are probably a little large for the room but they sound good . 7. Power or ability to go loud (8) - The difference now is astounding with the Focal's having a heathy db in comparison to the Epos… the good thing is there is very limited fatigue even at higher volumes. 8. Detail or resolution (5) - Not bad but could be better, I think maybe the limitation is the amplification here as the warmth overpowers the detail occasionally. 9. Coherence or flow (5) - Very similar to 8. 10. what would you try most to improve? - I have recently upgraded the source's and the speakers which have made a lot of difference, oh and the power cable I got from Mike for the source was a surprisingly good upgrade too… Apart from that, not sure really, but doubt wifey will allow me to spend anymore money on Hifi for the foreseeable future!

Hmm. This is an interesting exercise - great idea for a thread!
1. Tonal Neutrality 7 - it would be the SP8 being the main cause of this 2. Bass extension 7 3. Treble extension 5 4. Vocal or midrange quality 6 5. Dynamics or slam 6 6. Soundstaging 8 7. Power or ability to go loud 8 8. Detail or resolution 6 9. Coherence or flow 8
------------------------------------------------------------
10. what would you try most to improve? I'd like a more detail and a bit more attack. The latter especially on CDs

Yep, nice exercise Martin...
1. Tonal Neutrality 6
2. Bass extension 5
3. Treble extension 6
4. Vocal or midrange quality 8
5. Dynamics or slam 7
6. Soundstaging 7
7. Power or ability to go loud 9
8. Detail or resolution 6
9. Coherence or flow 8
------------------------------------------------------------
10. I would like a little more deep bass, and a touch more 'sparkle' in the treble.

I need to think about this for a while
except
10. I'll do what I can to make it better all round

Reduce Bass, increase midrange (equipment improvement: DAC, then speakers)

1. Tonal Neutrality (1 is very cool, 9 is very warm) - 4
2. Bass extension (1 is very light, 9 is very heavy) - 7.5
3. Treble extension (1 is limited, 9 is very 'hot') - 5
4. Vocal or midrange quality (1 is recessed, 9 is pronounced) - 5
5. Dynamics or slam (1 is quite flat, 9 is very dynamic) - 7
6. Soundstaging (1 is quite flat, 9 is very dimensional) - 7.5
7. Power or ability to go loud (1 is limited, 9 goes as loud as you ever want) - 9
8. Detail or resolution (1 misses detail, 9 is highly resolving) - 7.5
9. Coherence or flow (1 is muddled, 9 is musical strands are easy to follow) - 7
------------------------------------------------------------
10. what would you try most to improve? I'd like to improve things that aren't really mentioned on the list. Viz. Transparency (similar to detail/res but not quite the same imo) - I'd rate mine as 7. Dynamic nuance (again, perhaps similar as #7 detail or res but not quite the same) - I'd rate mine as 7+.

Perhaps we should rate each others' systems?

I was thinking of a similar one called 'microdynamics' which is like your dynamic nuance. Transparency is very difficult to quantify, isn't it? Part of my interest is in how systems compare, but also in the psychology of how we rate our own systems. A kind of 'happiness index'.

Umm, no, I think transparency is very easy to hear and put a number to! Most systems / components are not very transparent imo. I suspect most folk don't even want transparency. I do, though, it's probably at the top of my list of system wants. I like to hear what is actually on a recording and you can't do that if the sound is murky, imo. I guess that's why I tend to prefer boxless speakers like panels or my MBL's radialstrahler drivers. No boxy colourations to get in the way of the sound. Happiness index? - I am very happy! - call it an 8.

I hear how i want the music to sound to my ears.Utterly smooth but detailed, not a single ounce of edginess. I would not want to change it..

Lol I would not really judge a system until I heard it in its usual environment myself
