In life, we don't always progress steadily in one direction. Fate can deliver us huge and unexpected advances, but also some difficult reversals. Its a bit like "snakes and ladders" I've always felt. I've negotiated a few of each in my time.
I've been thinking about what it would mean for my Hifi listening if I slid down a big snake or shot up a big ladder and how this would affect the best Hifi I could afford and accommodate. Here are the bits I'd likely assemble if I was skint or minted:
1. If I was broke but still lived in a home with a typical size living room, I'd go for a Rega Planet, creek 4040 and Either Monitor Aaudio 352 or JPW P1/AP2/AP3. If I had cash to retain vinyl I'd likely go for one of those Rega made decks re-badged by NAD, Goldring or Akai as they can be had for as little as £60 if you search hard. Likely cost: £250-£300
2. If I was further limited by room size, and only had a tiny space I'd use my iPod into the Creek4040, whilst downsizing speakers to Royd A7. Likely cost: £75 plus the iPod
3. Up a ladder but still n a typical room? I'd buy a TMS3, Naim 555, ARC SP10, Krell KSA50 and Reference 3a DA Capo. I would still buy used so cost would be around £12,000 I guess.
4. Moving to a huge house with limitless cash? Well, I'd likely nick off to the USA and board dozens of American bits. If I had to choose only one, I'd buy a Vertere turntable, upgrade the power amps to Krell KAS and hang the biggest pair of Apogees I could find on the end of them. Likely cost: Under £50k and £30k of that is the Vertere.
It's an interesting exercise because I realised that I could probably just about afford my dream system if I didn't push the boat out for the Vertere. Sadly, I'd still need the lottery win to afford the huge house in LA though!
