That's good general advice, Jerry.

It certainly seems to be an issue with many "fora" that one must be very thick skinned and ready and willing to get into a verbal fight if one dares to post at all. They appear to be particularly attractive a a certain kind of person who needs to find fault with/prove wrong/counter and/or take the piss out of everything and anything posted by another member.... I think you need to distinguish between a vocal and combative minority and the larger group of more reasonable people on forums.
I'm coming to the view that it is best to just ignore offensive or aggressive posts as if they weren't there. I think it is important to remember that you don't have to respond - "don't feed the trolls" is a good maxim in my view!
That is probably sensible, but doesn't make the initial foray into a forum any easier. I post once or twice when I register then after seeing a level of dogmatism or aggression quite often decide life is too short and switch back to lurking mode.

I guess that, rightly or wrongly, when I receive abuse or aggression on forums my instinct is "if you think you're going to win using those methods then two can play at that game... have some of this pal". This probably just causes an escalation but rather that than run off with my tail between my legs and let the twats win!

I prefer the cold hard facts delivered gently with a big stick in the background approach. But, honestly, I'd rather not have conflict at all.

I think the "conflict level" is quite low at the moment.
We all probably know why.

I don't think any of us would actually prefer conflict... other than those who seem to start it without provocation that is!

Yes indeedy Are we both thinking of the same place, here? I'm thinking of Andrè's previous residence.

If I had the dosh, I'd run a forum entirely for individuals who had be banned from other forums.

Yes, that forum already exists. It is indeed a bit like Viz but without the wit or irony. Edit: in retrospect I should have written 'self knowing irony' or 'intentional irony' .

Oh, there's irony aplenty, it's what makes it so funny. I'd have to agree that there is a dearth of wit though.

Not everyone from the forum I think you're talking about is banned from lots of other forums. We have some members here whose contributions I appreciate. It's a pity that these intr forum issues can't be laid to rest. Hifi enthusiasts who post on forums are a relatively small group and the cliques and historic rivalries just spoil things IMO.

I think you speak for most of us here Andrew. And, actually, probably most of the people who habituate the various fora.

I don't think any of us would actually prefer conflict... Sadly, there are a few who seem to feast on conflict and enjoy the trolling. It only takes one or two to cause major upsets on forums. But then, doesn't that just reflect life in general?

There's a medical condition that I invented that I call 'internet autism'. It's a failure to recognise that you are dealing with real people with real social interactions on forums just as much as if you met them face to face. Most forum trolls don't behave that way away from their keyboards. Many/most of the forum trolls are actually decent folk when you meet them, in my experience!
