Is a mellotron an instrument ? Indeed is a electronic synthesiser an instrument ?

I'm an ex drummer, so I love a 'good' drum solo. I love cello work,

Is a mellotron an instrument ? Indeed is a electronic synthesiser an instrument ? A Mellotron is basically an Early sampler keyboard. The key sounds are sampled onto audio tape. Virtually ever early prog band used one..

Having read wikipedia it would seem there is no definitive definition. I personally would draw that line at sounds synthesised by chips or code. Peter gabriel 4 is an awesome album crying out for more real instruments.

Most of them really, so long as it fits - I can't really think of an instrument which makes a sound I don't like. I like the clarinet a lot though. Special mention for a couple of non-Western instruments, the Guqin and the Shakuhachi - some really lovely music has been written for these.

Have you ever heard Indonesian Barong? I attended a concert in Bali once. It's not that the instruments (Gamelan), played with small hammers, are odd so much as the music has a tonality scale such that there is no discernible tune to the western ear.

Hell yes! I'm very keen on Gamelan - have a nice collection of LPs. Here's a couple of recordings I really like (some overlap with the piece you posted):

There's a fair bit of Gamelan influence on some of Frank Zappa's work

Are we talking balalaikas here?
I think it depends on the music itself at times. I love Larry Adler's playing on the theme from Midnight Cowboy, but I'd be less convinced listening to something else. I like some cello pieces at times, but then not at others. Did have a bit of a spinet obsession one time, which I put down to watching The Adams Family. Used to have a certain fascination for the zither, but grew out of it. Do like flamenco guitar. I like some guitar sounds some have, like the Captain Pugwash-like sound The Pretenders had at one time or the sound Mike Oldfield had on Wonderful Land.
Can't beat a bit of sax though, can you? That rasp! That fruity rasp! It does things to me!
Oh, in recent years I've aquired a thing for the Hammond organ.
(No sniggering please.)

A Hammond organ is a thing of great beauty in the right hands.

Is a mellotron an instrument ? Indeed is a electronic synthesiser an instrument ? If JS Bach were alive today, he would take to the synthesiser in precisely the same way as he took to the period equivalent of the organ. He would have loved it.
