The cheap DACs will do a passable job but they're not going to compete with a Caiman-II.
More importantly, how are you going to extract optical or co-ax from an iThing?
I note amusingly that the SMSL has its optical and co-ax inputs reverse marked!

Don't expect them to compete,no idea about extracting optical or co ax - thought you just stuck a lead into the headphone jack to the dac then the dac to the amp? And Chinese products at their best.

What istuff do you have Chris? I believe it's possible to get a digital audio output from an iPad and iPhone - not sure about about the iPods - via USB. In which case, you'd need a USB DAC (or a USB interface that you could then run into a DAC). I don't think the phone/pad/pod have an optical output (though the laptops and desktops do).

indeed I have just purchased a £5 dac which i am informed will be just as good I bought it because it was a £5 though and I personally have no intention of comparing the two . If you're happy with it please post details and a review as such an inexpensive DAC would interest many members, I'm sure.

I'll second the Caiman as a great DAC. Not tested against others by me.

Having tried their gear a few years ago I really would consider the HIFIMEDIY Dacs

It looks like it should be USB-B rather than mini USB, but in principle yes. I'd check, though, on the process of getting the digital output from the iPad - I don't know if you might also need some additional software - and on whether there are any compatibility issues with certain DACs.

Right - looks like this would fit the bill. Think it would just be a lightning to mini usb lead in and 2 RCA out? Is that right? Lightning to USB-B, I think.

That's it, Chris. It's likely to work first time or not work at all. When you get it going, you're in for a pleasant surprise, I think.

Toiling to find a lightening to usb b. Hi Chris, i do do pretty much what you are trying to do, using an HRT Microstreamer, but then plug my headphones into it as its a DAC headphone amp. I've looked back through my Amazon orders, and the cable I bought is this: Amazon link. As its an apple cable though, it's not exactly cheap. I plug that into the lightning connector of my iPad, then a USB to mini USB cable into my Microstreamer, then my headphones into the phone output. Cheers James.
