OK - bedtime problem I am trying for what I imagine is the simplest way to just play a couple of test tunes from the desktop by adding a mount I am pretty sure I have the Ip address right (typed ipconfig in CMD), and the fileshare protocol right (SMB/CIFS) I have the remote directory as C:\Users\Richard\My Music but I get "Last system mount error Retrying with upper case share name mount error(6): No such device or address Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs) " What am I doing wrong?

Fresh try in the morning. I re-read Martins thread
I shared "My Music" (although I think it already was shared) I referred to the directory without the path I changed the capitalisation of various names I created a directory called "Music" in the root of C drive, copied some files in, shared it, and tried to use that to get up and running
Some change - instead of the previous rejection messages it just hangs saying "connecting"
Also - it doesn't "see" the USB I plug into it with music files on. I can play music from webradio - but I am not succeeding in accessing my own files. And the "hangs" last several minutes.
Indeed - whatever settings I have it just hangs "connecting" as soon as I go to the library. I can't even try to delete the problem mount
Any thoughts?

Update. Found a "reboot" option somewhere - that just hung too. Unplugged the Pi and restarted it. Decided to run Ping.exe to find the IP address of the Pi I forgot to write down, and it stopped hanging, and listed the files on the USB drive. Presumably coincidence, but... The hanging library problem remains. The problem seems to be that it hangs trying to update from the pc / network and it trys to connect every time you select any function other than the playback menu May have to do some work now

Just got to the bit where Martin got Volumio 1.4 working with the B+. Have installed 1.4 instead of 1.5 but same problems...

I'd love to help you Richard, really, I would. Did I mention my status of digital numptyness?

I appreciate that Chris. I need help! However, I am rushing it cos I'm like that, when I admitted I hadn't time, and blundering forwards learning stuff. I think what I would like to try doing when I get to a working solution that properly plays the music I want it to through the system I want, is to try to document the minimum steps to get up and running efficiently with Windows 7. I suspect many of the answers are in Martins and Pinch's threads, but they are long threads, they cover areas I'm not (yet) interested in, there are a lot of false starts and discoveries and its quite bewildering. If I get time tonight I'm going to look at the firewall. This has a very firewall feel about it, and Bitdefender, installed a few weeks ago to replace Webroot internet security, has been a bloody Rottweiller causing me endless grief with updates and the like. I thought the Digi+ card had arrived all day, until I opened the box, and it was guitar strings! Hopefully I'll have something positive to report later Any joy with the home plugs?

Nice one, Richard. I was about to say "RTFT" to you, but you did and you got it working. Better than Plug 'n Pray - well done!
I hate to tell you this, but you needed to read a little further, as the Ninja case you have won't fit the Digi+ board. I switched to the HiFiBerry case.

Oops - ok, I hadn't flicked the page...
You discovered all on your own that a USB device is only seen on a reboot with Volumio. At least, that's what I've found.
You've setup the share on your machine with a share name and made it read-only to everyone? In Volumio, did you add the necessary authentication in the form of name and password in order to access the share? In my case, I login to my Windows machine with my Microsoft Account and password, and it's these that go into the share credentials. So you need the machine's IP address (not the RPi's), the name of the share, your username and your password.
Go back to 1.5, which is better in all ways than 1.41 (1.4 won't work on the RPi B+).

Thanks Martin. I'll try 1.5 in the morning again but 1.4 is working OK apart from the connection. I actually shared read & write. The machine ip is correct. Username is Richard which I log in with on boot, and the password I use for that login. The directory is the dos path c:\music.

Set the path in Volumio as just music without the c:\

Sorted. Not without some frustrating blind alleys. BAck on volumio 1.5 Rebooting did NOT get it to recognise the USB drive - the Pi might have seen it, but Volumio treated it as not there (not in the library list) until a global update was performed. I rebooted 5 times before I cottoned on. I also did a volumio update (but there was no information as to whether any update) took place. It was a firewall issue. Turning off the firewall (and correcting the destination to Music and not C:\Music) got me connected. I know this is not what this is about, but at my work desk just using the Pi's own audio through Nad 3020 and Mission 70's its no worse than any other computer source I have used there. Tip regarding the volumio/local DNS - I think you have less patience than me Martin. It takes maybe 2 minutes from power up for the system to register. Typing 192.168.0.96 (the IP my router keeps allocating the Pi) doesn't get you there any faster, and when it does eventually connect the address bar shows volumio/local! Now - a couple of quickies before I move onto the next stage How did it know Music was in C drive? I have a D drive and F drive connected too, and previously Music was on D (this is a legacy situation, on my "to do" list, to unpartition the main drive, but...) I presumably need to allocate a fixed IP address rather than the current dynamic IP? Getting there

Major success Now playing music from my "proper" music directory - FLAC version of Animal and Man. Might be a bit clicky but different to the MP3's. Need to plug it into a proper DAC next. (Actually - really dire now I have listened 5 minutes). Low res is alright. That probably means I need to configure the wifi adaptor I bought for now - drilling holes for Cat5e will have to wait till Christmas Tip: If, like me your music is in "My Music" in so the windows path is Users>Richard>My Music, then the DOS path (check using the cmd prompt) is C:\users\richard\music (case insensitive) the Volumio path is Users/Richard/Music (case sensitive) I also want to get a way of accessing the music from my phone over wifi - so JRiver is the obvious route to explore, except I need to install it on the music server (my desktop). It is currently on my laptop (which I could physically take to the DAC in the living room for testing). I've ordered a new case and the Dac from HiFiBerry (I know I can't use the DAC and Digi+ at the same time - I might build another for the kitchen Must do some work

Bit naughty Before disconnecting decided to download sound@home to the Galaxy Note 3. Works first time. I am controlling the Pi from the phone OK - its not as cool as the JRiver, but its $50 cheaper - and I haven't got JRiver working yet . But happy with progress

Rebooting did NOT get it to recognise the USB drive . . . Tip regarding the volumio/local DNS - I think you have less patience than me Martin. Typing 192.168.0.96 (the IP my router keeps allocating the Pi) doesn't get you there any faster, and when it does eventually connect the address bar shows volumio/local! I seem to remember now that it required a Library update to see the USB drive, but I'm fairly certain that 1.41 didn't see a newly introduced USB drive without a reboot too. Not to worry, I stream everything now so local drives are immaterial.
As for the volumio/local DNS, that works fine for me now. Probably an early glitch. I gave it much more than 2 minutes!

I presumably need to allocate a fixed IP address rather than the current dynamic IP? Share names must be unique, so it doesn't matter where the drive is, the RPi knows the share name and the serving PC deals with where it is.
I allocate a fixed IP to my serving PC just to keep things stable otherwise the odd router crash/reboot may allocate a different IP address, causing the RPi to see no music.

The St Bernard from Switzerland has just lumbered in with my Digi+ card. Dac+ and new case to follow. Although I might take a drill to the existing case, because it looks like it might fit. Pity I am even further behind with work, helping my 20 year old son sort out a complete disaster with his car - turbo-charger blew, engine rebuild needed, - went to pick it up last night and the new turbo was faulty. Poor kid, its his 20th birthday today and he wanted to take his girlfriend to a spa day in it. I've been on the phone a lot...

I'm so excited I could pee my pants. It works again! Calm down Richard - tell it sensibly. I'm behind with work, but have the family due in about 10 minutes. Daughter and boyfriend, son and girlfriend, one from 2 stepsons and my parents. This is Christmas for us until the outlaws on Boxing Day. Footnotes later about why its special to have my kids and what happened with Tims car. I decided they would just look at their Dad as Senior geek if I tried to explain about the Pi. I needed a working demo. So I broke layer 3 of the case into bits, modified the lid and layer 8 with a dremmel, and mounted the Digi+. No time to drill holes and put in Cat5, so fitted the wifi dongle. I did briefly read the completely useless "read this before installing" - but since it was about drivers for every operating system under the sun except the pi, I thought I'd just plug in and see. Family just arrived - more later, but you will gather it HAS WORKED (after a fashion)
