I have a pair of these which I acquired second hand and have just started using them with a new NVA AP10 P. For hygiene reasons, I have replaced the ear pads and the internal foam disc. The head strap cushion has been thoroughly washed. They have already been upgraded with the fitting of a Bottlehead signal cable. What do others think about keeping or removing the foam disc that sits directly between the ear and the diaphragm? Does removing it add some clarity/transparency to the sound or does it go too far in this respect?
What do you think?

You need to give 'em a good thrashing first - 3 weeks should do it!

Removing the foam disc in my Superlux headphones gave a small but worthwhile improvement in clarity.

I run 650s without the foams, I regard it as similar to removing speaker grills. The criticisms levelled at 650s for being a bit dark are resolved with this simple reversible mod.

Thank you. I realised it would be a case of suck and see for myself anyway, but just wanted the opinions of others

Removed the pads tonight and had a listen. Definitely the way forward. I had more clarity and detail revaluation. Certainly as Tony suggested, the sound is more balanced and not so dark. For me this has been a bigger improvement compared with removing speaker grills. It's a major improvement that I am now benefiting from. Many thanks for your suggestions, helping me on my new found headphone way

A better cable can also help. There is a seller on ebay called RedBandMusic who does cables for the HD650. Apparently it's a good upgrade and does not cost a lot. I have this planned for next year.

Wonky, any chance of a link to the cable. I have long thought about upgrading my cable but there is a bamboozling aray at some eye watering prices. I run a grado extension that lets me use the cans in the front room to listen to movies but recently rejigged my music set up letting me take the extension out- to my surprise the original cable sounds better. I really need about 5m in length so the after market ones can really get a bit salty money wise. I might pester Brian to make me something up with Klotz cable and report my findings.

received my cable today for the 650s. Improves on the bass but is noticeably less congested in the mids without adding any treble nasties. Very good pound for pound upgrade.

received my cable today for the 650s Did you have to solder it in or is there a connector at the headphone end, Tony?

It has a connector easy to change leads on the 650 and 600
