blackhat is turning out not to be. I've never seen such cobblers as the little light that shines from one of the CPU pins on a motherboard somewhere in the heart of the power station control computer. Really, I thought that kind of representation of computing had died since most viewers are a bit more savvy nowadays. Obviously not. Not to mention the Chinese and Americans co-operating so closely, and the female network manager playing a part in field investigations. Really?
Spare me!

'Steve Jobs'. Excellent film, the best I've seen for ages. Interesting, concentrating on the period between 84 and 98 was clever, yet the Americans never like having the hero's publicly lambasted. The film has done much better outside the US then on home turf. Self obsessed uber driven (successful) egotistical man with a couple of inferiority issues (Roll necks?), wonder if he liked naimifed valve amps as well? Just goes to show how ones person's excellent is another person yawn inducing, Winslet's accent kept slipping as well did you notice? Saw Carol over the weekend again, very well reviewed, beautifully shot, great performances, interesting plot line opposed female sexuality rails against the uber (on the outside) conservative America in the early 50's. Again did not engage me on the the level I was hoping for, for others it was quite wonderful I suspect. Our local picture hous eis telling though, 28 people watching Carol on Saturday evening while upstairs Daniel I can't act Craig but looking buff, packed the screen and has done for the last 3 weeks, pure brainless entertainment that puts bums on seats, job done. Personally I prefer something a little more stimulating for the grey matter, however I apprecaite now and again a little non brainier film fun is called for.

Yes I was really looking forward to watching this film and even paid to hire it on Sky. Thank god I didn't buy it, utter twaddle of the highest order!

Martin as you are clearly a Ridley Scott fan you must try and see 'The Martian' before it leaves the big screen, I saw it Tuesday in Malta and didn't want it to end, despite it being a long film. Outstanding and I got a shock half way through when it abruptly stopped . . . WTF, has the projector broken? Nope, just what they do in Malta - they have a break half way through the film for 10 minutes. Silly buggers . . .

It's on my list, Tim, will go and see it on my own if I can find it running anywhere. Otherwise, I'll be pre-ordering the Blu-ray.
Ridley Scott can do no wrong.

Remarkable is the perfect word to describe FURY.
Don't be concerned it features Brad Pitt and Shia LaBeouf, their performances are excellent and atypical. Filmed in the UK and both written and directed by David Ayer, for many reasons has allowed the realization of a powerful and mesmerising film, dark and intense.
What makes this work remarkable though is the level of tension that is created and maintained throughout. Obviously in action sequences but quite subversively during calmer times, such that as the film ends you become physically aware of it's effect. Seems like you've been holding your breath for an hour, just forgotten to breathe.
Conversely I went to see Bridge of Spies recently. Though by no means a poor film, it was a story told and historic context explained without any soul. Had it been a David Ayer vision I could imagine better communication of the tension between America and Russia during the Cold War, the confusion and desperation of the East/West Berlin separation, the imminent threat of discovery. I thought the facts were all suggested but failed to connect emotionally.
So I recommend FURY to everyone, even if you aren't usually drawn to war films, but with the caveat that it may well raise your expectations...

Saw the new Star Wars movie last night - really enjoyed it. Great fun. It's basically a remake of the original, but those seeing it in 3D/IMAX are in for a treat - some of the fighting scenes with the iconic spaceships are breathtaking.

Again did not engage me on the the level I was hoping for, for others it was quite wonderful I saw Carol yesterday and really loved it. As you say Tony, it is very stylish, a clever script, and wonderfully acted, especially by the two leads. I really liked its under-stated nature which somehow made the characters even more credible. Highly recommended.

Star Wars on Tuesday for me, looking forward to it. Saw The Big Short recently, excellent film and is tipped for Oscar nominations. Outstanding performances from all the main characters, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Christian Bale and Steve Carell. It'll make you mad though . . .

Saw Star Wars today and was rather underwhelmed, just seemed like been there, done that - not really anything that seemed new or exciting. Not sure I will bother with the next one, certainly not at the movies anyway.
