Really like the look of Afire, will keep an eye out for that thanks. It's very good Jules and I'd say you'd probably like it. I've seen all Petzold's films apart from Wolfsburg, there are 10 in total now.
Only just out at the cinema, but the type of film that might pop up on Film4 - it's not really a Netflix / Prime film . . . BFI or MUBI maybe?. Most likely a MUBI I'd say as they feature a lot of Petzold's work. Other one's to look out for would be Barbara, Yella, Phoenix . . . hmm, well, all of them really!
Barbara was the first one I saw of his and I've been hooked ever since.
Found four of his films on Amazon so added to watchlist, might watch one tonight.

Oh well, based on the first one it'll be worth the wait. My son and I watched Dune together and we will do the same for Pt.II.
Villeneuve is the new Ridley Scott.

Villeneuve is the new Ridley Scott. Well there's a whole (long) conversation there . . . . I get where you're coming from, but I don't personally think you can compare the two at all, very different filmmakers
But both are right up there with the all time greats, that I can agree on.

The Unthinkable 2018 Swedish (not the 2010 film with Samuel Jackson)
Starts off like a love film of sorts. Interesting music Not what we were expecting
Then it goes mad
Great film. Watch to the very end
IMDb It's midsummer and Sweden wakes up to a state of emergency. TV, internet, and telephone networks are down, and before anyone realizes what's behind the ........

Villeneuve an all time great? Gosh that does surprise me, not even close in my book but vive la difference as they say!

Sicario, Arrival, Blade Runner 2049, Dune. Not enough for you, Jules?

Villeneuve an all time great? Absolutely Jules, but for different reasons than Martin lists - I think his best film is Incendies.

When I think of "all time greats" names like Powell & Pressburger, Hitchcock, David Lean, Kurosawa etc come to mind. I can't put Villeneuve in that kind of company.

Certainly agree with all those, but that kind of thought process seems so restrictive and historical . . . like having a greatest guitarists of all time list with only a handful of names, all of which haven't done anything since the 60s or 70s. So nobody of note since then? . . . not sure I can agree with that
I'd have all the names Martin mentioned, with Tarantino, Nolan, Villeneuve, Scorsese, Fellini . . . . and so many more and you absolutely have to have Kubrick in there.
I suppose it's subjective on what you class as an 'all time great' and if they have to be dead or not!

Of course, they were just a few of the first names that came to mind, not an exhaustive list ...

Mind you, you can't really put anyone in the same company of the likes of Hitchcock and Kurosawa
Maybe 'all time greats' of certain decades might be a more appropriate way of approaching it . . .

O-M-G I watched The Exorcist last night on BBC iPlayer for the first time in decades and was absolutely blown away by the mastery of the imagery and storytelling.
The prologue and build up to the possession are so expertly crafted and the exorcism scenes still pack a hefty punch today. What also sets the film apart is the quality of the performances that make everything feel so credible. Although the sound isn't great, the image quality is superb on iPlayer - highly recommended if you haven't seen it for a while.
