That's the first of David Hare's " Johnny Worricker" trilogy, Jules. Now you've got to find #2 - Turks & Caicos, and #3 - Salting the Battlefield. I think Bill Nighy is perfect in the part, but I like Bill Nighy.

An excellent British film for grown ups, Page Eight is an unflashy political thriller by David Hare that simply relies on a decent script and performances. Even Bill Nighy can't derail it. Thanks, Jules. That's on my watch list. I like Bill Nighy, too.

Bill Nighy makes me laugh actually - he takes underacting to a whole new level, makes you wonder why he bothers turning up at all!

Bill Nighy getting almost Shakespearean as the head vampire, Viktor, in Underworld (not to mention Kate Beckinsale in PVC and Leather) Bill Nighy on " being" a vampire.

I thoroughly enjoyed Page Eight. If you guys come across #2 - Turks & Caicos or #3 - Salting the Battlefield, do let us know.
By the way, Rachel Weisz is most alluring in this.

The Vanishing (1988) on Apple TV is a somewhat legendary film that transported me back to the 80's in some happy ways but is genuinely very unsettling. Apparently Kubrick considered it more scary than The Shining! I guess you would call it a psychological thriller. Definitely has shades of Hitchcock about it. The original director also remade the film in Hollywood a couple of years later ...

I saw Oppenheimer Dark and leaves you with a sense of the fucked up nature of humanity I saw it today too John at an IMAX, overwhelming in parts both visually and aurally - I haven't stopped thinking about it and plan on going again this week. Still digesting it, but it could be my film of the year. Without giving any spoilers away the central performance by Cillian Murphy is stupendous, Oscar nomination coming for sure and Robert Downy Jr. gave the best performance I've seen from him. Gorgeous cinematography and a great score . . . . despite being a human story rather than a mind bending Nolan puzzle, it's still unmistakably a Christopher Nolan film.
I didn't notice it was 3 hours long as I was totally immersed and found it absolutely riveting. Nolan really is a master filmmaker. It does need an investment from the viewer as it's very dialogue heavy, there's no action, no CGI - it's a full on, information rich, very thought provoking adult drama. It's a real film

Watching T2 again is very nostalgic. The production values are just so immense, as are the performances. The young Edward Furlong is outstanding and so cool in his Public Enemy t-shirt. Why can't we have this quality of action film nowadays?

Yes that movie is incredible and feels massive and is so exhilarating. First movie I ever saw at the theater.
It occurred to me that if they needed to recast the 1987 film Predator with actors from today to play badass tough guys there wouldn't even be enough badasses to fill out the cast.

Why can't we have this quality of action film nowadays? It was a cracker and so was the low budget T1, very good indeed on limited resources. I always thought it was the role of Linda Hamilton's life.

I remember being quite frightened by Event Horizon years back. Event Horizon is one of my favourite films. I've just watched it again. The core must be one of the creepiest designs for a machine ever conjured up. It looks like pure evil.

There is a game called Dead Space that is a bit reminiscent of Event Horizon but not as good as EH certainly.
Have you guys seen the film Pandorum? Still not nearly as good as EH but it might hold a candle to it in terms of creepy tone.

Have you guys seen the film Pandorum? Yes, and no it isn't. Alien, Event Horizon and Pitch Black remain the most epic SF horror films for me.

If I remember correctly, it was more a sub-par "Alien" but then again any film of that genre that didn't have the fabulous Sigourney Weaver in it was automatically sub-par in my book. Pandorum was actually supposed to be the first in a trilogy of movies, with a prequel and a sequel to follow, but due to the original's less than stellar box office success, or lack thereof, they were cancelled. Pandorum actually has its own Facebook group too. I luv Google cos it make me sownd clevver and nolligabull.

Pitch Black did some excellent things that no other film has quite managed: the superb crash landing sequence at the start, the sound effects of the creatures; Riddick's visuals in the bright light; the chap with the lighter in the dark; the true meaning of the eclipse; the end scene. It was quite the achievement and doesn't get the credit it deserves.
