20 Feet from Stardom is an absolutely wonderful Oscar winning documentary about the great backing singers in the music industry and the sometimes precarious world they inhabit. Thanks for this, Jules. I was only reading about Sam Brown's woes with her voice recently. I shall be watching it.

Baby Driver
Put on my watch list by Amazon, on ITVX
Remarkable ? Yes. They took what would normally be conveyor belt stuff but did it well There is a music connection too
So often I watch films and think they should have been good but they weren't. Waste of time
Give Baby Driver a go

Baby Driver. The single track that ruined an otherwise classic album for me.

Baby Driver. The single track that ruined an otherwise classic album for me. Bridge Over Troubled Waters? I just wish it had been better recorded. I feel that the music easily transcends the quality of the medium, except for that one bloody track that, to me, sticks out like a (very) sore thumb. It's one-too-many " fast" tracks, and has always felt like " filler" to me, it unbalances the album. I'll blame the impending breakup, but if they had to use a live version of " Bye Bye Love" to pad it, surely there were other, great, live tracks in their canon to be had? For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her, or April Come She Will perhaps, or even both of them as they're fairly short songs? Yes, I really do dislike it that much. p.s. Bridge Over Troubled Water won a Grammy for "Best Engineered Recording" in 1971.

It's a great album of songs, but the production, especially on the title track, is problematic.

Oildale Recommended Starts off slow and stays that way. An indie film that uses the slow pace and silences. The rocking chair/s scenes are so good Oildale Imdb

I watched Licorice Pizza last night and absolutely loved it - probably a bit marmite for most, but I love Paul Thomas Anderson's writing, quite quirky at times but for me that's part of the appeal. Two great central performances, a great score and Tom Waits too . . . what's not to like

I've finally finished watching 20 Feet from Stardom. An excellent insight into the backing singers, some of whom are quite stunning singers in their own right. You feel for both the winners and the losers.
The clip of Lisa Fischer singing with the Stones is superhuman singing, real tingly stuff.

Excellent. A band playing as a unit. Even our Mick isn't annoying This from a non Stones fan and connoisseur of (only) great female vocal

I saw " 20 Feet from Stardom" some years ago, and watched it (and thoroughly enjoyed it) from the viewpoint of a musician of sorts and a obsessive (nerd). It's a great nerd's movie. I remember being quietly proud of how many names and faces I recognised. Perhaps I should revisit it as simply a "fan" of the music.

Not sure how much Australian cinema you guys have watched but I've seen 5 Australian films recently and each one was an absolute win. Aside from Willem Dafoe, Sam Neill, Hugo Weaving, the casts were almost entirely unknown to me and the films just moved along so well.
The Snowtown Murders, The Mule and The Hunter were top notch. The other 2 I'll have to track down the names of and both had literally all unknown casts and were superb drama between people that felt real.
I'm 5 for 5 now with Australian films.
The Snowtown Murders though is gritty, unforgettable and a bit disturbing. Not sure if anybody needs this kind of an escape in their life right now but on the off chance, here's the trailer.

2001: The Making Of A Myth (on freevee) I've only just started watching, but I know that the " floating pen" is going to make the whole thing worthwhile. I love "making of..." stuff, and it's one of the reasons I still like DVDs and Blu-rays; for the extras. Jeanette and I got as much enjoyment and entertainment out of the copious extras included with the "Lord of The Rings" trilogy, for instance. Anyway, we've reached "the apes" so I'm going back to paying attention. [EDIT] Definitely worth a watch if youire a fan (how could you not be? ) of the movie.

I've seen documentaries and know how the floating pen was achieved (and the stewardess switching orientation). It was a magnificent film, one of the all-time best ever made, and the SFX would stand up to scrutiny even now. For 1968, it was absolutely gobsmacking.

The new Barbie" movie appears to be taking off globally, even in places, and with people, one might not have expected it to.
