Remarkable. Quite remarkable. The original Omega Man which starred Charlton Heston and Anthony Zerbe:

If anyone is interested in a little bit of decent sci-fi/horror I would recommend the film Apollo 18. Its good enough that I've revisited it maybe 5 or 6 times since seeing it in theaters. A completely unknown cast for me and they just nail it.
It's pure fluff but has a very serious and gritty tone to it. Here's the trailer.

I never took it seriously but it does look well made.

Apollo 18, Primer, Alien (1979). I adore these small cast films.
You know something I've realized upon rewatching Alien recently? The camera looks handheld but is barely moving in the scene when Dallas is telling the crew about the distress signal. It feels like I'm sitting with them.
So many movies these days cut so fast from face to face. I loved Event Horizon (though I know its quite old now) but in the scene when Dr. Weir explains to the crew what happened to his ship the camera cuts over 20 times from face to face at angles you just wouldn't experience in real life and sort of destroys the illusion imo.

Remarkable for it's 1954 stereo soundtrack. Bit iffy in places:

You probably know this already, but that one film is the reason all " pirates" speak like they do, in the movies, with their " Arrrrrr Jim lad"s and " Avast behind boys". Apparently, he was born in Dorset and grew up in Cornwall, so he just exaggerated his "normal" accent for no obvious good reason. There's even an " International Talk Like a Pirate Day" where everyone is supposed to talk like Long John Silver did in that film. Needless to say, Newton is the "Patron Saint" of International Talk Like a Pirate Day.He was also a bit of a lad it seems, and a role model for both Oliver Reed and Keith Moon.

Interesting pirate fact:
Eye patches weren't worn wholely because of eye injuries. They were also worn to sensitise the eye over a period of time to help with navigation at night. With the eye being more sensitive to light, taking the patch off at night would aid with seeing the night sky and navigating a course. OO AHH... Jim lad...

I am not so much into film... but the movie I have enjoyed the most the last couple years was The Shadow in My Eye (also known as The Bombardment) from 2021. It is a Danish produced movie that a saw on Netflix a week ago. It is about a WWII bombing mission that accidentally targets a school full of children.
It manage to caught my full attention, without losing interest for a second, which rarely happens to me when watching movies...

Close 2022 - Lukas Dhont
My new film of 2023 - devastating, beautiful, thought provoking and impossibly gorgeous film making of the highest order 5/5.
It's on MUBI at the moment. If anyone liked Aftersun or enjoys Céline Sciamma's work, then this is one for you.

'All quiet on the western front' (2022) Is an amazing film showing the horrors of war very graphically.

Agreed. All Quiet On The Western Front was a turning point for me with WW1 films. I no longer wish to see what happened in that war.

Blood and Gold is a rather different WW2 film on Netflix. I'm used to watching war films that try and be realistic / reverential of the war (like All Quiet) but this doesn't. It's a Tarantino-esque Spaghetti Western style adventure about a rogue SS unit looking for gold that was stolen from a Jewish family, but a German deserter and a farm woman are determined to stop them. Not without dark humour amongst the body count (the disfigured SS leader is very 'Allo 'Allo) it is hyper violent, in a almost cartoon-ish choreographed style and romps along at a good pace www.netflix.com/gb/title/81557402?s=a&trkid=13747225&t=cp&vlang=en&clip=81671972

Good question Tim. I feel slightly awkward watching a war film that is unashamedly made to 'entertain' but it has a kind of madcap energy about it that made me keep watching and I hadn't seen anything quite like it. For what it is, it's very well made and I liked the performances of the two leads, especially the woman who starts off as the caring type and then becomes an angel of death ...

I always thought Guy Ritchie had a really good film in him. The Covenant is now on Prime and tells the story of an Afghan interpreter working with the military. Definitely a story that needed telling, Ritchie managed to rein himself in to concentrate on the story rather than tricks. Fantastic performances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim.

20 Feet from Stardom is an absolutely wonderful Oscar winning documentary about the great backing singers in the music industry and the sometimes precarious world they inhabit. Personal stories of success and failure, hopes and dreams, I found it compelling. Free to watch on Prime. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/video/detail/B00LTYX0QM/ref=atv_dp_share_cu_r
