I thought it might be good to get going a health thread. To help inspire us all around improving health. The idea is to look at diet, exercise and perhaps experiences that have made a difference in improving health. It is important if you do have a serious condition to see your doctor as quick as possible. I do think some kind of exercise regime is important so I do some Chi Gung its very simple to do a good way to start the morning I find these simple exercises make me feel more positive for the day and a good stretch

I do yoga every morning, self interest as I would be crippled if I didn't. Great start to the day and a wonderful way to listen to music as well

I've been trying to stick to the alternate day diet but I have no self-control and there always seem to be reasons for breaking it at work
When Ruth and I are living together I am determined to do pilates to fix me.

The answer lies between the ears and I believe incremental change. The priority is staying alive, well and happy. I enjoy the yoga too, it's not a chore.
You can start with just one minute gentle stretching on the floor, even that on it's own is great. I can demo next visit
For diet I change slowly and gradually over years and now have just what I want, with the need to keep prompting the chef for less and perhaps a cut in total bread volume.
This good Pilates guy is in Lightwater, finishes at 5.30 I think

Started out as a fix for my back, neck and knee - and it did !
Can't remember when I realised I was also enjoying it

The back a strange thing Suffered for years Posture important at work I am really careful have back support computer screed level with eyesight etc. Has made a huge difference At home have a acupuncture mat that is a bit like torture and if in crisis which has not been for a few years have found cranial osteopathy and acupuncture helps for me but think different things work for different people. I guess if I could go back in time I would never of had a back op, as it always is weak after that

Osteo and Chiro has fixed me before. Alexander Technique showed me much better how to 'be'. Posture improved hugely. My Yoga and Aikido took a big step up Hayden, the Pilates guy has someone in Sally's class where he has postponed, at least, her hip operation, by working on the muscles to take the strain. He is improving my neck and shoulders I wonder what he could do for you !

Great idea for a thread John and very important too. Having been chained to a desk for the past 5 years I am now paying the price with a very weak and painful back. However last year I decided enough was enough and I have lost 4 stone, with 2 more planned before the end of 2014. I walk to work everyday and my back is improving, but still needs work. I am due to retire soon and that will be a total change of life, with the focus being on diet, exercise, having fun and a more positive attitude. I know I will do it too as I'm a stubborn old bugger and when I get a bee in my bonnet about something, I can get quite obsessive about it Yoga is something I plan to try and a dear friend of mine is a teacher . . . . only snag is she lives in Chicago, but I plan to get my butt over there next year.

It's never too late to start right away Gentle stretching is a good place to start, lying down so it's not so far to fall

I'm being dealt with by a consultant rheumatologist at the moment Mike, so have to do what he says - I'm having an epidural injection in a few weeks time. It's more than just back pain I have a chronic disc problem from a road accident in 1997. Once it's sorted (hopefully), then I can work on recovery

Take whatever the medics say carefully. They can be 100% right but too many with an axe to grind, like the idiots who insisted I should have my veins done. Pointless waste of money and unnecessary, and they came back. The problem I started with has sort of come back and I'm trying to work out what it is.
Knowing what I know now I would go and see a few other specialities. Might come back with the same answer of course after spending dough. The back is so important. When I have any sort of problem I still do the gentle stretching and the yoga to see where I am. Any pain and I nudge gently and usually back right off.

Worked out one of the reasons I like stretching and yoga every morning.
I'm listening to the music on the main system - bliss

+1 for Pilates. Helps the core pelvic muscles that support your lower back and helps prevent sciatica. I also like riding my bike and that mutt of mine takes a bit walking.
I also do a very physical job and regularly set myself tough stuff to do (10 drums of chemicals up four flights of stairs,2 at a time sort of thing) instead of going to the gym which I detest.
Tell ya what as well - I feel relaxing properly is very important as is eating properly and trying to be emotionally stable. Big things a lot of men overlook.
