I've discovered a few artists with Mojo and Word CDs too That's totally different from your point in the OP though Mike? But I agree, magazine discs are indeed very good. They are compilations though I find some are boring rubbish. Others give me artists I never would have found and a few tracks are real gems.

A CD compilation led me to my favourite record of all time.
It had two movements of the Paganini Violin and Guitar Grand Sonata in A. I spent ten years looking for the other movement without success. Finally put out a help message on AOS and who should have a copy but Stu(pinda) here in France. A deal was done and the rest of the record is superb as well. Copies go for upwards of $100 in the states.
This is though, only the second time that a compilation has tempted me to seek out a complete piece of music. The other was a version of The Four Seasons.
So they do have their uses. My problem is that a friend of mine keeps dumping the damn things on me. He gets every magazine with giveaways and when he has a pile the size of Everest, he moves them on!!

what a lot of smug, conceited, elitist and arrogant tosh is being spouted in this thread A tad sweeping, don't you think? Some members have made a great deal of sense about compilations, including yourself

Ah... I see a terminology thingie here.
I read 'compilation' but saw 'sampler' I see nothing wrong at all with greatest hits. In a lot of cases, those greatest hits were such because they were the best bits. Now I have such a lot of music on the Mac, I tend to make my own compilations of my favourite bits whilst keeping a copy of the original album as well. I know which I play most. Artistic integrity is a much over used idea. I like what I like and sod what the 'artiste' wanted me to hear.
It was a sampler that I was referring to in my previous post.

My word, what a lot of smug, conceited, elitist and arrogant tosh is being spouted in this thread. Goodness, who rattled your cage - rather extreme Barry don't you think? Folk are just expressing opinions. Thanks for popping over though, really nice to hear from you.

More discoveries in Compilations Big Bent fan here so grabbed Bent Best of as there were tracks that are not available anywhere else. Very good buy for me, but the surprise is I love the way they have put the tracks I already have, over the unreleased tracks. Currently stuck on the kitchen system CD playlist Other point on the Mojo and Uncut CDs given away with the mags. So many are appallingly bad with not a good track on them. Others, with the usual mix of different artists are great. Must be down to the person/people choosing the tracks Uncut best of 2009will prompt me to find out more about most of these artists

What's a "compilation," Grandpa? Is it like a playlist?
I subscribed to Uncut for a good few years, and discovered loads of great artists. They had a spell where they were mad keen on Americana, which is how I discovered acts like Whiskeytown , Buddy and Julie Miller, Sturgill Simpson, The Handsome Family, Ryan Adams, Neal Casal, and many more. It's also where I first heard the brilliant Jackie Leven.
