It was no good with pre-recorded cassettes ( ) that were glued together.

Pre-recorded cassette tapes were generally of poor SQ, as few manufacturers adhered strictly to the Philips' "Blue Book" (?) specification.
I quickly learnt that the best sounding tapes were made by recording them myrself, and by using blank tape for which one's machine had been optimised.
When I acquired my Nakamichi cassette machine I realised that Nakamichi, along with Philips and one other brand, whose name escapes me, had strictly followed the Blue Book and so pre-recorded tapes played back on them sounded fine.

So I wasn't doing so bad after all ! I picked up a Nakamichi (700 ?) to record with - at a very nice price as they discontinued them

I recall that using a pencil was de rigeuer. Biro pens were prone to slippage and could make matters worse.

I soon found that it was important to apply a little fingertip resistance on the other spool ('dual capstan style') in order to get an even wind.

That's it John - take up the slack with a pencil before you place it in the player. Aye I used to have a little plastic cassette hand winder, like a crank handle.. However i found it easier using a BIC Biro, they were perfect for the job..

They were just a tiny bit too small in diameter but if you angled them a bit they worked fine, I seem to remember.

I don't understand why this is in the past tense . I still listen to cassettes and yes, a pencil does come in handy occasionally to take up the slack. Lawrence

I don't understand why this is in the past tense >:(. No offence intended - I just tend to talk in the past tense when I'm recalling a memory!

None taken, I looked for the scratching head smiley but couldn't find one! If anyone has a decent Nakamichi player that they don't want any more I am on the lookout. I don't trust eBay any more and would rather buy one from the forum. Lawrence

I have hundreds of Pre-recorded cassettes, i don't play them just hoard them, same with 8-Track Cartridges.. Tape listerning is alway on R+R. However my Cassette collecting must be 1st issues with paper labels. I won't touch the later direct printing to the plastic body NO YES
