Yes, the SanDisk one was fine.. A Samsung one was not! I've never really liked Samsung or LG gear! Some things we've had self destructed much earlier than you would expect. This just strengthened that mistrust - irrational perhaps, but I speak as I have experience. SanDisk all the way for me.
Unfortunately the usb DD I have is Samsung, I've not used it much.. perhaps it will last, perhaps not.

Right more wisdom needed. I've got the usb drive plugged into my remote router (the main router a sky one is so cheapskate it doesn't have a usb socket!).. I have a main router in the house and a piggy back one in the music room.. I've shared it on the remote router settings (Enable Samba, Rebooted the Router). I can see the Samsung usb device in the router device schematic. I can see it on my laptop the other side of the house under Mycomputer and Network. I can even play the music files in Windows Media Player. In fact WMP is all that comes up if you right click on it. That and Create shortcut and properties. Under properties theres an IP address fe:: etc I can get Volumio to see the Talktalk Router when I scan for new devices in My Music under network drives. It shows a Share option directly under the scanned result. Clicking on that, Volumio fills in the Alias as share, NAS IP Address as Talktalk Router, Path as share File share type is cigs If I leave username and password blank it doesn't matter. I've tried the Talktalk router's IP address I use to access it / is visible under attached IPv4 devices in my sky router, I've tried the weird IP address above and the one under IPv6, I've tried admin and password as username etc. And no username etc as I've not set up a usb user. I tried that too but it didn't make any difference.. I get an error every time in an orange box to fast disappearing to read it all. I managed to screen shot it on my phone though entering the settings in there... I can't make much sense in the cigs manual. Am getting worn down by it all What am I doing wrong?

I love my LG phone and TV. I love my LG phone, my LG TV, and my LG 3D BDP...and I'm really pleased that they decided to change their name back in the nineties because "LG" sounds so much cooler than "Lucky-Goldstar."

Right more wisdom needed. What I do know is that a USB drive in my Draytek router is only visible under certain circumstances. It is not visible in Network in Windows, for instance. Try going back to basics. If you plug the USB drive into the laptop and share it, can Volumio then see it? Remember to give it your Windows username and password. Test that music will then play. Then try another USB stick in the router with just a single music file on it. Using the first NAS as a reference, play with the settings. It might need the other protocol (SMB?) rather than CIFS. SMB is often used for Linux-based shares, and the router is likely to be running Linux.

I've been trying to share the music folder in my laptop too. Can't get that to work either. Tried all the tricks on the RPi guide thread and other readings..
I need to restart the laptop though..
It feels I am much closer with the USB drive tbh. At least Volumio can see the router.
Perhaps it is my dual router Implementation but I don't see why.. yet!

I'm tantalisingly close now. My android phone can see my USB drive on the Talktalk Router and I can access all the files.. Evil Urges almost within reach Martin.. Still get that pesky 112 drive down CIFS mount issue. Looks like it might need some more Linux command stuff?

Turns out you need to just happen to know to add vers=1.0 in the options box under advanced. Obvious wadanit! Some Linux bod wrote about it on the Volumio forum.. otherwise I'd have had no idea! Now the drive is there. Ignore the failed two. One is my upteen tries at the drive on my networked laptop, the other a previously filed usb drive attempt. Not sure what I'll see under USB when it's done? I've rebooted and an doing an update / scan. There are a lot of files so it will take ages. Can check it from time to time remotely of course. Not sure the update / rescan is working.. I do get a notification window but when I click on them and PuTTY command MPD update, it gives 40% continuously..

Ah yes, that's because SMB v1 is used a lot by Linux systems but is deprecated in the corporate world as being vulnerable. Therefore the default is for it to be disabled.

Ah yes, that's because SMB v1 is used a lot by Linux systems but is deprecated in the corporate world as being vulnerable. Therefore the default is for it to be disabled. That means not a thing to me After the night the Share size is still at 0MB under Network drives and USB is empty in My music.. Next challenge to get it scan the files. It says it is doing it but nothing happens - I suspect the path is not right but putting anything other than "share" in there stops it configuring and it's back to the mount error. i've tried exactly the path as my android phone sees it and parts thereof.

Have you tried the auto-find? Do you have the right username and password in there? Are you using Linux slashes '/' rather than back slashes?

Well a clear head and rested eyes and seemingly what I tried last night and didn't work works now. In the TALKTALK router share section under Anonymous Users, I chose the directory I wanted to share filling in the Directory mode - choosing from a browsable option I then addd that exact music directory path in the Share box in Volumio. It worked and started ticking in files. Yes, Linux slashes / needed If you actually save that setting in the router share options, Volumio then fails to access and gives the mount error again. It stopped at 244 artists, 348 albums and 3123 Tracks. that's NOT everything though - it scanned then pretty quickly too. In the music library, under NAS (not USB) and in 'share' are my files, listed under Artist. Only A to D though.. No Evil Urges yet

My impatientness. It's more slowly pulling in more artists..
I can play a song too. Although silently as I'm in bed still and the RPi is remotely the other end of the house with the Hifi all switched off.
Now to back up that config file pdq..

Intensive comparison session.. FLAC on NAS USB drive first.. First resampling in Volumio 24/96 Vs no resampling. Def. prefer NO resampling. Really like cooking on gas compared! Then I listened to a few of my old pals that are not on Spotify Sounds nice. I can't A/B compare with my laptop -> USB -> WaveIO -> I2S -> Najda as it's not trivial un-plumbing the RPi / Kali and replumbing WaveIO so this is from memory. The Lissie tracks on that album sound stunning, really alive! Then I listen on NAS vs Spotify. Used Yello's Stay as it's a comparable version (not remastered etc) on both.. Spotify has the measure of NAS. There's not much in it though.. Depth of bass and the emotion carried over is just slightly better. Really pleased now!!! I've got as good as what I had before, yes there were possible improvements to be has with SSD, dedicated Windows music server etc.. But the SQ jump of RPi / Spotify has made it a preferred source due to catalogue and ease of use etc. Martin was right all along I will try just my favourite tracks that are missing on Spotify on a usb SS flash drive rather than the current 1.5TB Samsung spinner that's a few years on now.. Onwards and upwards.

Regarding upsampling, if you upsample red book 16/44 then upsampling to 24/88.2 is mathematically better than to 24/96. Give it a try.
However, you had it with 'Spotify has the measure of NAS'. It really does!

I'll try that 24/88.2 setting. Listening more, there is one area where NAS served FLACS have a slight edge I've found. That is fast complex and perhaps not that carefully recorded stuff. Take Wolf Alice's Beautifully Unconventional track.. There is a slight presence of artifacts perhaps some would call it distortion in the mid and treble that FLAC just does better. Those missing bits can't be hidden. It less pronounced than on say Tidal Vs Spotify using ChromeCast Audio.. I may have to try Tidal on RPi Volumio (I assume it's possible?).. On more 'hifi enthusiast' stuff Spotify has it. Better overall balance of dynamics, bass and appeal - whatever appeal is But Spotify premium Family is so compelling being used by 4 of the family, used everyday on our multiple Sonos speakers, mobile in the car, and now on my hifi to a very high standard..
