Nearest thing I can find is a Corby Rivet, which is used in knifemaking to hold handles onto blades. www.jatagan.eu/en/corby/Doesn't seem to have a hole down the middle though.

OK, now that might work better than the flange/plate things I have seen. Thanks. The material it's to be attached to may be slate though, so it could be tricky to fasten it. OK with wood, which I may use. Lots of things to be settled yet! Thanks for all the suggestions fellas - some more thinking required!

If the slate is thick enough, a rawlnut sounds perfect.
