My recent exploits with cabling and observing dust made me think seriously, again about moving my 2 Creaktiv racks forward so I can easily get around the back to move mains cables, interconnects and have the ability to move kit more easily.
Who has clear space at the back of the system and how has it worked for you ?
Do you have your system backed up against the wall ?
Strong opinion on one against the other ?
My changes identified so far : spanning the wall from the mains socket to the AM conditioner so big chunky Coherent BD power cable going across the gap 2 to 4 feet up. TAD E1 speakers will have to come forward about as much as racks or move sideways. Would take a while and I bet I find out things I didn't know I didn't know
The flexibility would be good, the encroachment into the room less so

I use two Ikea Besta units stacked, put castors on the bottom one so it’s easy to move. Given my constant fiddling I always need access.

My stuff is all on a built in unit in an alcove so there is no space behind it. I drilled cable holes in the top of the unit so everything threads through those and hangs down inside. Still looks a state on the top where all the wires are run, it is what it is, i dont faff often if at all, if i do, it usually requires half a ton of dust removal first

My Solid Tech Duo system rack is gapped from the front wall only enough to allow cables to fall naturally. It's a bit tight but I can lean over or go from under to connect/disconnect things. Going single-source means it's much less complex now and I can dress the cables not to fall parallel or touch the wall.
There's also the need for my two regenerators to be close to the 60A double-socket, using just 1m power cables. All further distribution is then from one of the two regenerators.

Thought yours was further out. How far from the wall is the back of the rack ?
Another question for us all is how far is far enough ? A good clear walking space would take up too much space for me. Need to work out what is manageable and think about items on either side of the racks TV on the left, cabinet on the right A very long time now since we moved back into the refurbished house, 2009 when there was hardly anything anywhere. Now too much stuff !

No room. Rack has to be as close as possible to a wall, the only saving grace being a long mirror there that helps me see what I'm doing!
When we eventually move, I dream of a room that won't constrain where the rack and speakers are placed.

My rack is a sounds unique unit and is on the left hand side in the room very close to the wall . But the only real way to get at cables etc is to strip the whole rack and then build it back up from the bottom items up . Would love to have it further out but there is just not the space . Those Quads do like their space and often there is only one place you can you can put them .

I set up the system specifically with this in mind as I am often changing equipment so ease of access is important imho. Although the big Ideon dac is a bit of a pain to move about! Athough there is enough height between the levels to facillitate equipment extracting quite easily.

To be fair Tony your access requirements are a little more important than the average listener . But good to hear that you do have to not work too hard to swap things about .

I answered "A little but tight to move around" but that's my main system, my second system is up against a wall.

All my equipment is in an alcove on a built in unit and a shelf above it. I’ve different things stacked on top of each other, which I know isn’t ideal, but I’ve made an effort putting feet between each piece of equipment. Cabling is also a mess at this stage, going through holes etc, but I have mains and signal cables separated as best as I can.

The UK system is on two racks either side of a doorway and is very tricky to access anything to make changes: luckily none are needed! The German system has more space around it and, being in my studio, is not constrained especially by aesthetics.
