I at the moment have to steal the time to listen, so right now a phone playing a youtube playlist is perfectly enjoyable. The main system is pretty silent most of the time

Just to qualify this, i voted for the last one. i work from home and go into my office 1 day a week. My teenage kids are always in. I cant listen to music while i work because it breaks my train of thought and concentration so i just dont or i dont get anything done. When ive finished work my teenage sods are all in shouting and bawling and making a row, so the only time i get to sit down infront of the main system when there isnt loads of noise is usually saturday and sunday mornings before anyone is up. So, when cooking or mooching around on an evening, there is usually a youtube playlist on either my phone or my wifes phone. Or if sat down later, ill use my b&w p7 cans and the phone with tidal. Closed back so i cant hear whatever shite is on the telly. And for my once weekly commute i use public transport, so a couple of hours using my old sennheiser momentum 2 over ear cans while sat on the bus. My tale of woe is probably exactly the same as most people who have noisy obnoxious little gits in the house, but its wether you accept it and find another way other than the main system to enjoy music. And actually when you strip it back to bare bones, the genesis of the obsession will have been hearing something on a radio however many years ago... tapping my foot on a bus with some cans on is no different in essence than tapping my foot sat on my sofa in front of some wooden boxes in my living room..

The poll doesn't quite hang together as options 2 and 3 are not mutually exclusive.

Your tale of woe reminds me of my strange situation when we had teenage kids. Our house has 4 floors…3 floors plus a cellar. My listening room is in the cellar. I used to get complaints about my loud music from our kids who were on the top floor. It’s one way to stay young!

Yesterday my girlfriend commented that I don't seem myself. I could think of two reasons why Work is causing some concerns. That when I become unhappy with sound it also affects me. What I found odd I didn't feel like this without my system. I know as soon as I become happy with the sound it will all change and those feelings will immediately stop. So why put myself through this. Well I just know I can immerse myself totally in the music.

Number 2... l do most of my listening and discoveries on a phone speaker, radio in the corner of the workshop, driving the car... A good tune, is a good tune...and harks back from my transistor radio days and a single earpiece. For me it's about emotional or musical connections,or a moment in time thats past.
lt also helps me appreciate my set up, as l listen only on the weekends. So number 2 for me

I voted in the middle. Listening and hearing music is the most important aspect to me, whether on my system, a smart speaker or the 25 year old mini system set up in the garage.
In terms of my 'HiFi', main system, I have strived to get the best SQ as far as my ears are concerned, and attempted to keep to a budget overall, probably more than some would spend but not into the realms of silly HiFi, nearly everything is pre-loved except for the turntable, cartridge, speaker and phono cables. I found by doing so that I got much better bang for £'s, in other words better SQ, by that I mean realism in presentation and clarity, this in turn can expose that failing in some recordings or the quilty of the media.
I have a reasonable collection of records LPs, 12"singles and singles, these rang in SQ from pure heaven to the odd annoying crackle and pop, but I generally enjoy listening to whatever I put on. If I find a record that irritates due to poor quality for whatever reason I will replace it. The same goes for CDs and SACDs, most CDs are pretty good but some from the 80s and 90s can be flat or bright, a consequence of poor transfer and engineering I expect.

This probably only concerns a few of us bods who enjoy classical music, although there are, perhaps, modern parallels to be drawn with things like the Beatles recorded at the Star Club in Hambourg, I'm talking about this stuff - Historical RecordingsThe Joy of Historical RecordingsI certainly have some, and can happily enjoy them. Does the recording quality put you off, or can you listen to them?

One of my favourite albums is Operation Mindcrime and that is renowned for its poor production.

I had a few Nimbus re-recordings of 78s on CD. I could appreciate the performances of, say, pre-war Furtwangler and the BPO, hearing how conducting styles and orchestras have changed. An insight and appreciation, I would say. It's not something I would do often as I far prefer to lsten to a contemporary great performance and recording, to hear the full power of an orchestra which is a visceral thing. Even more so with an organ.

Sometimes I find it pertinent to remind myself where I came from.
Listening to Hard Day's Night on an all-in-one turntable system in our lounge. Sounded mighty fine then.
Owning a walkman with the flimsiest of headphones. That sounded pretty damn good too.
Even later editions; portable CD player, iPod, tape/CD in the car sounded good.
Why? Because it was about the music.

I can enjoy music at different quality levels, but one thing I cannot do is listen to music on a phone speaker. I’d rather not listen to it at all.
