Sooner or later I'll work through both Vai and Satriani and find out how I feel about them Playing any artist's entire works is often revealing and sometimes arduous

Ironically I would say Yngwie has the better vibrato and has a great tone. However, as much as I can admire that I can loose interest fast. I actually walked out on Joe the second time I saw him (the first was at the Marquee) and vowed never to see him again. To be honest few musicians can pull off solo instrumental based music well. Jeff Beck Guthie Govan Shawn Lane Larry Carlton (sometimes)

Satriani was good at the Hammersmith Apollo and did play some favourites, e.g. Surfing With the Alien, but I won't be looking to see him again.

Wow. I've had the chance to listen to this album all day yesterday at work plus a bit more today at work.
I honestly can say this is one of the funnest (semi-less wankey) Steve Vai albums.
I no longer have 3 albums in the top ring of Vai albums.
Now it's just Alien Love Secrets and The Utra Zone.
And on a more pathetic note: I beg the fellowship here to try Satriani's album 'Not Of This Earth'. It focuses a lot more on songwriting with catchy riffs than it does on showing off how fast he can do leadwork.

I've never been much of a fan of the widdly guitarists but Steve Vai got a second chance with me because of his connection with Frank Zappa. Having said that, I find his solo work impressive but yawn-inducing. I've never heard this album and it was more palatable than I expected, to be honest. Ultimately though, my opinion of his solo work remains unchanged.
A 2/5 from me.

I'm still of the opinion that if you just listened to the second half it would be much better received.

I love virtuosity and speed in playing the guitar... just find it a bit difficult to listen to on a regular basis.

Paul...I'm sorry...I mean...have you...is the first track...a joke to you? Definitely not a joke, just an excuse for playing lots of notes very quickly. There was simply no heart, or soul involved, no feeling. Technically excellent, and as antiseptic as all f*ck.

My thoughts remain much the same as before, some good tune some not so good, some extreme guitar twanging done in the best possible controlled and deliberate manner, not his best album IMHO.
Still it gets a 3/5
Satrianni - does this sort of stuff with more aplomb and less brashness.
