I'm sticking with boring old 5.1, Martin. My front speakers are a pair of JPW Mini Monitors, the rears are Eltax HT-2 Bipolars. At the front and centre is a Monitor Audio Silver 12, and my sub is a 10" down firing JBL

Anyone here with a 4K Blu-ray player?
I'm going to buy one to replace my son's Xbox which is a PITA to use. Not looking for the best but trying to avoid the worst. It seems to be a choice between Sony & Panasonic.

From what I've heard, buy Sony not Panasonic.

It seems to be a choice between Sony & Panasonic. I have a Sony BDP6700 great picture has upscaling very decent sound via co-ax to DAC less than £120 older design but still well rated www.sony.co.uk/electronics/blu-ray-disc-players/bdp-s6700

Second hand Oppos are very good.
Panasonic has some little quirks, Sony’s are always pretty stable.

I've just grabbed a new SONY UBP-X700 Blu-ray player, for a couple of quid over £200.00 on eBay. I don't think I can upgrade any more of my A/V system. Well, not until I start on the speakers, and that will be a lonnnnnng time from now.

I remember when I got my Sony BDP-S5000ES, it was a very special machine at the time. I hoped it would stay, but when I moved it to my family room set-up I found out that it's HDCP was out of date and my new Anthem Av processor would not pass the signal. So I had to sell it and bought a £70 (New Cost) Sony Blu ray player which is still going strong today, but the kids now use the Xbox for everything so it does not actually get used.

Excellent, do let me know how you get on with it Paul, it's on my shortlist. Will do, Jules, although I'm not sure when it'll be. I've been waiting, so that I can do everything (swapping cables, plumbing in the new Amp, and the Blu-ray player, etc.) in one go, but I'm not actually joking when I say it'll have to be a day when I feel confident of not only getting my body onto the living room floor without too much pain, and even more importantly, getting it back up onto two feet again, and currently I don't fancy the first, let alone the second of those actions I will say that I researched things pretty thoroughly, and spent ages searching for a decent, affordable, player that handled 4K UHD, and 3D. Of course, this was before I realised that my new TV doesn't handle 3D a.f.a.i.k. so I had to go back to the drawing board and research some more. I always conduct my due diligence with a planned upgrade like this, so it's probably a good sign that it was on both of our shortlists. Hi-res audio was also a selling point, although according to the What HiFi review it doesn't have it, and in fact, the Sony site only mentions it on the basic details page and not on subsequent pages. It's actually worth reading the What HiFi review www.whathifi.com/sony/ubp-x700/review if you haven't already, as it offers a few useful comparisons with the X800. Sound-wise, it will handle Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, as does my TV, and similarly the X700 also features HDR10 and Dolby Vision, as does my telly, although it may require a firmware update for Dolby Vision. Built in WiFi was another plus. For bang-per-buck, as well as features, it was my winner. And, hilariously , after all that, It also plays 3D Blu-rays.

Paul, have you investigated either a tall-ish dolly on wheels or a short stool on castors to help you do things at a low level while still sitting upright?
You can take solace from knowing that we'll all need such aids one day.

You can take solace from knowing that we'll all need such aids one day. I have literally got to get down to ground level to install the new kit, and even if a dolly, or a stool, might work I'd have to move the whole TV stand much further than I need to just to "crawl" behind it. I would also have to move a load of cables so I didn't run them over. Sadly, it's a manual job.

What might be best to watch hours of pro cycling and skip through ads ?
My Tivo continues to be my recording device Scart to Panasonic Plasma and Toslink to TAD D-1000
Bought a Panasonic HD recorder on Ebay which I could also use RF in and HDMI out to TV

Surely subscribing to whichever Sports channel shows cycling would give you what you want, in better resolution?

I'm guessing that a large percentage of Mike's "needs" involves being able to skip ads. Unfortunately, companies pay to have their ads visible, which is an important part of a broadcaster's revenue stream. Said broadcasters, therefore, are making it ever more difficult to avoid the ads.

ITV4, probably ITVx for Tour de France in July and this weeks Paris - Nice and Quest with Eurosport - commentary so bad I often turn the sound off Tour of Italy and Tor of Spain for 3 weeks each The Tivo works and has done since the 90s
