Thinking of going and just wondered if anyone has been and what their thoughts were if they have?

If you have any specific questions, I might be able to help as my (Greek) nephew has been working there for a while.
Very beautiful island that can get swamped by cruise visitors by all accounts. I'd be wary about going in peak season personally.

Rhodes, which looks fairly nearby, was in the news a few weeks ago because the fires that stranded 10k British travelers there.
But the reports also mentioned how bad the heat is in that area advising tourists not to drink alcohol or coffee as it adds to dehydration.

Something tells me that Tim isn't a peak season kinda guy! 100% with bells on Chris.
Very late Sept, or into October and about as far away from Oia and Fira as possible, Oia won't even get a visit! - I'll be wanting to go where the locals go, not all the selfie taking numpties. I found an open air cinema earlier and thought 'oh cool' but they're showing Mama Mia and My Big Fat Greek Wedding at the moment, so that can go and ********

Nice Mike . . . my current shortlist is Kos, Rhodes and Santorini - not been to any of them. Santorini took my fancy because of the dramatic coastlines and history, but it looks to be the most expensive of the three. I'll be arranging my own scheduled flights and likely staying at an Airbnb too, away from any of the resorts.

Rhodes isn't really a pretty island unless you go round the north coast up past Monolithos. I'd rate Kefalonia far higher for scenery and tradition.
Kos is nice, we stayed in Kefalos one year, but that was in the 90s, we've not been to Santorini don't fancy it to be honest.
Weather in the Med is mixed right now, Rhodes been hot and sunny but Kefalonia been suffering rain and no sun for a few days this week.
Edit: to be honest you'll not go wrong with any of the Greek islands, we've been to Rhodes nearly every year since 2006 but that's because we fell in love with where we stayed, but as always places change and not always for the better.

Some parts of Crete are lovely and Knossos is well worth seeing. However, it's quite touristy in season although I know you would avoid that. A lot of places close outside of season though.

Yeah, October is about as late as I can push it before it goes into hibernation. I've been to Crete a lot over the years also Kefalonia and parts of the mainland, so fancied something different. Definitely wouldn't go near Santorini in high season - the more I've looked into Santorini today, the less interested I've become to be honest. I might just go to Malta or Gozo or buy a new amp instead!
I love southern Crete away from the beaten track, around Samaria Gorge and Loutro I quite like.

Tim If you want quiet and away from the beaten track, try Chalki. It's a tiny island to the west of Rhodes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's only about 13 sq miles and has just one proper road. The permanent population is about 350 or something. We have been a couple of times. Back then, there was no fresh water, so it had to come in by boat. Apparently, there's a desalination plant there now.

Now that's the type of suggestion I like, just been looking at that and it seems perfect. Couple of hours by ferry from Rhodes - nice one ChrisB , thanks.

You're welcome. A kind of middle ground between somewhere like Kefalonia and Chalki might be somewhere like Kalymnos, which you can get to on a boat from Kos. We've been there a couple of times too.

Malta was hit with aftershocks from the Morocco earthquake, but they say they don't need outside help so can't have been that bad.

Malta was hit with aftershocks from the Morocco earthquake, but they say they don't need outside help so can't have been that bad. Malta experiences near earthquake aftershocks all the time, an average of 9 a year at M4+ - the one on the 7th Sept was only a magnitude of 2.3 - highest this year was April 22 at M5.5 which was the highest for the last decade. So nothing to see here, you can all safely go on holiday to Malta

Going to see the in-laws again soon on the mainland but am very keen to visit Crete and Corfu in the future.
We've been to Thassos, Limnos and Samothraki some years ago - all were very beautiful in their own way but priority goes to family visits.
