We(well the gaffer) are having a new kitchen fitted soon and part of the job entails removing an elderly fuse box and replacing with a breaker type system, traditional meter staying in, do breakers provide a better source than fuse style boxes? Am I just hoping that the expenditure will have a sonic benefit to help soften the blow of the cost though?

Yes, breakers are better than fuse wire, and you can upgrade them to ones with better contacts.

Octopus are getting very keen to put a smart meter in
I may not be able to avoid it
What can I do to keep the rubbish spoiling the system, or at least improve it ?

Octopus are trying it with me, too.
Foot down, not having a smart meter no matter the persuasion.

Just refuse to have one fitted Mike,it's not a legal requirement. EON send me about four messages a month, l just never make an appointment..simple.
They even use tactics of claiming they can't offer you a deal unless fitted, but as it stands, there aren't any deals worth signing up for.

Thanks guys
They said
We’ve emailed you before to let you know that your electricity meter has reached the end of its certification period and needs to be replaced, but you haven’t made a booking yet. It’s really important to replace your meter now to ensure that your readings are accurate and you only pay for the energy you're using.
Book your smart meter install today, and we’ll handle the rest:
Choose your appointment date What is a certification period?
Just like food, each electricity meter is given a 'best before' date when it's manufactured. This is called a certification date which is set by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS). It's our responsibility to let you know when your meter has reached its certification date and replace it so it stays in working order.

That's just tactics.. lf your worried about it, get a independent electrician to inspect your meter, and in theory your covered.

I got one of those veiled threat letters this week too Mike from OVO Energy - I'm ignoring it for the time being. I take and record my meter readings regularly and so far I'm happy there's nothing wrong with my meters
I've got 27 threatening letters from TV licensing now as well, some are quite intimidating but so far no-one has knocked on my door to check I don't have a TV . . I'd call 27 threatening letters sent to someone who is honest, but chooses not to engage with either the BBC or TV Licensing, neither of which I legally have to and neither of whom I have a contract with, bordering on harassment.

I bet Smart meters will be everywhere eventually No doubt about that Mike, it does make sense in reality. My reservations are the lack of any real standard equipment at the moment and the reports I've read about people having issues when they want to switch suppliers - how true they are I don't know, but I've heard enough to make me hesitate.

This particular leading edge of technology looks dubious if not broken to me Hope we can be allowed to wait for v.2 or v.3

My response to OVO informing me that my meter was out of certification has been to switch to Octopus (gas from British gas at the same time and just this week). If they do the same I will accept a new meter, but not a 'smart' one.

Or you could look into somebody issuing a new certificate, there's got to be a company somewhere offering this service.

I can add two experiences on this subject.
First a friend of mine who has a pretty revealing system had his meter changed from a quite old one to a new smart meter and noticed an improvement in sound of his system. He was not expecting any change, but it was clear to hear.
Personally I have gone from a year 2000 ish meter, so not very old at all, to a smart meter and didn’t notice any change in sound.
Hope that helps.

Well that was worth doing. I switched from Ovo and British Gas to Octopus for my utilities. I have just received a £1300 refund from Ovo as they have been over-charging for ages it seems, despite me giving them readings at regular intervals. I'm expecting some back from British Gas too.

British Gas has just emailed me to ask if I'd like to adjust my DD. Downwards. By almost 25%.
One benefit of having a smart meter perhaps? I don't know, but before the smart meter virtually every bill seemed to be "estimated", whether we'd sent readings in or not.
When my wife passed away and I was changing the account holder over to me it turned out that I was in credit. I took two grand back from them, which still left me over £1,000.00 in credit, which I was happy to float while everything else got sorted.
