Looking around as my lovely Tivo has struggled badly after power cuts. Had a look around at similar in today's world Watching much less TV so the great Tivo interface is not so essential
A Panasonic recorder with Hard Drive could be good. HD as well as SD I'm educating myself via Google, Ebay and Amazon
Various sizes of HD. Oh, hang on there are models with a DVD as well That could be good Another has VHS as well - wow. Surely must be old but worth a thought Freeview tuner in the box, that will eliminate one box *Twin* tuners ! Freeview Play, go back up to 7 days. This gets better
Spoilt for choice Been using Tivo for many years now so this is all news to me
General seems to be the best place as connected to my system

With streaming being the norm, do you really need a video recorder any more?
(this might end up as a similar conversation to the one I have with Ruth when she asks "what's on TV?" to which I reply "irrelevant" as everything is video on demand nowadays.)

I do miss my TiVo, it had to go when I switched to Sky and now that the only place to get F1 they’re not getting rid of Sky.
Humax have always made some quality boxes and I use to have a couple of those and the quality was pretty good.
Although we watch a lot of streaming, I still need to be able it record live tv. Back to the F1, I never watch it live.

the only place to get F1 they’re not getting rid of Sky. You can watch F1 pay as you go on Now! TV, both live and catch-ups. Better than having a Sky contract.

I see lots of complaints about Now TV quality online, my Sky box is pimped by Russ Andrew’s so both sound and picture are much better than standard box. That said sky cinema (which we do not have) is still poor quality compared to streaming movies on Netflix or Apple.

I improved the results on my TIVO (Virgin) box when I attacked the HDMI cable with clip on ferrites as well as all digital & power cables a surprising improvement was decorating the router inputs and outputs with ferrites to the extent that I am re-recording existing music recordings ie. Jeff Wayne War of the Worlds, bbc Promes, 1974 live Tubular Bells. As they are re-shown the improvement is quite dramatic auraly & visually.

We watch most things streamed. Amazon, Netflix, HBO, Disney, Disco+ for tennis grandslams month only, Iplayer, TennisTV via Chromecast for ATP tennis, Swedish TV - VPN at the ready. Anything without ads really!
Any UK commercial TV has maddening adverts that you can't skip, F1 too of course!
With a PVR it's skip, skip, skip.
Not sure Humax is good these days. We got one 6 years ago and the tv guide and select what to record system is rubbish. The previous generations were much better. Before then we had a Panasonic. That was 2003! Not bad, eventually it died..
I think the PVR market is dieing / has died, so there's little investment and development..

I think the PVR market is dieing / has died, so there's little investment and development.. I tend to agree. The last time I wanted to upgrade my Humax PVR the choice was pretty much what I already had. I've still got a HUMAX HDR-1100S 1TB, and record the odd concert, but other than that I pretty much stick with my Amazon Prime subscription (or some more nmefarious methods) and don't see the real need to record anything as 99% of it's on catchup anyway. There are a few set-top boxes that are 4K/HD capable, marked as " PVR ready," so beware of those unless you want to buy HDs etc If I were going to upgrade/sidegrade now, it would probably be to something like this. www.amazon.co.uk/Freesat-4K-TV-Recorder-1TB-Anthracite/dp/B07XRQ9JS6.

Main thing was discovering how much has changed in the past few years
If VHS is available on the model I'm looking at then great. No loss if not.
We have some DVDs that have never been looked at. My DVD player lost the battle for space so if the Tivo shuffles off I have a slot. If that slot has a box with lots in it then so much the better
We watch a lot of streaming but Adverts drive me nuts
As Steve says Skip skip skip

Haven't had a DVD player in years. Only DVDs we'd view occasionally would be of the kids when growing up.
Laptop can play them in good enough quality. They're also on cloud as VOBs.

We have a DVD player, but haven't used it for years However the conveyor belt of films and series from streaming for the boss is difficult to keep going so DVDs we watched years ago could be next up No adverts !
Not found to stream Nicholas Nickelby 1982 Dweebs 1995 Strange Luck 1995 VR5 1995 Band of Brothers - if you want to pay for it The Wire - if you want to pay for it
and others
I'd rather listen to music anyway

For an old TV, buy a Roku. We have two for pre-smart TVs.
