Shostakovich Symphony No. 10, Neeme Jarvi, Scottish National OrchestraNON-CLASSICAL FANS - SEE FURTHER BELOW Shostakovich's 10th symphony is one of two (the other being the 5th) considered to be fully rounded masterpieces, although virtually ALL of his output is worth a listen. For me, his 13th is another masterpiece but it's not for everyone. The 10th was first performed after Stalin's death, when Dmitri finally felt a release from the creative shackles imposed on him earlier in his life (he and other Soviet artists feared for their lives during his reign of terror). The whole symphony is a wonderful creation, using Shostakovich's typically highly individual and very Russian style. It starts immediately in a dark and sombre mood and this carries through much of the symphony. There is some truly beautiful music interspersed and much of it is 'picture music' (my phrase), generating imagery of a terrorised and poverty-stricken Soviet Union. NON-CLASSICAL FANS - READ HERE However, I want to make a special mention of the 2nd movement (Allegro). In just over four minutes' length, Shostakovich distills all of his accumulated venom towards Stalin. If ever music told a story, it is here in this piece. EVERYONE should listen to it and, perhaps, gain an appreciation of how classical music can communicate protest just as effectively as more modern genres. Fantastic stuff, as powerful as anything he wrote in his lifetime (and the 13th is an incredible exercise in fear and oppression). Play it loud! I have chosen the Jarvi performance with the SNO as it's searing in its intensity and the Chandos recording is superb. open.qobuz.com/track/130837316

Well I have this recording in my collection which says it all really.
However I do have a preferred recording but not compared the two for some time so will do that and revert.
Much obliged, Martin.

Martin has played me this on his system I can remember that sense of dread and darkness. Not a easy listen in any sense it demands your attention I would love to hear this live. Not something I can listen to often but a bit of music that is truly moving Not sure if it's a 5 or 4 for me I need a few days to take it all in to decide

An utterly crushing, bruising performance of this beast of a work. Incredible clarity and unity of purpose from start to finish, it's really a recording to savour and get lost in. The orchestra express themselves so profoundly - too many moments to mention, but my god those horns in the 3rd, the haunting, sinuously playful woodwind solos in the 4th and that feral climax in the middle of the 4th.
What does it all mean? So much debate in recent decades about the Stalin theme which seems to make such perfect sense when you listen. I've yet to read an alternative hypothesis. Maybe the composer's motives were so personal they will not be revealed...
I haven't had a chance to revisit the live recording by Nelsons and the Boston Symphony that I have much enjoyed in the past, must get round to that again.

Another fabulous video from Dave Hurwitz - not only does he go through recommended recordings of this work, he breaks down each movement to explain what is going on thematically ... Superb!

When he breaks into "we don't need no education" I laughed out loud.
He really is entertaining AND educational.

I really learnt a lot from that video.
Now watching his assessment of the 5th and will listen to Jarvi for that too ...

I love it when Shostakovich "squishes" Stalin with his own theme.

I've listened to a considerable number of recordings of the 10th now. In addition to the astonishing Jarvi performance in the o/p, these are my two other favourites: Petrenko, RLPO Ormandy, Philadelphia
