Coming from her fourth release, Lust for Life, Del Rey has fully perfected her dark femme fatale songwriting style, many songs featuring vignettes from ordinary life. White Mustang recounts the end of a relationship and features her dark downbeat mood in a song that perfectly epitomises her style. I think many (probably most here) write her off as another pop songstress but she is quite unique in the way she combines her alto voice with dark lyrics and brooding instrumentation. She is definitely unique in that I cannot compare her with anyone else, I find many of her songs beguiling and some quite outstanding. This one does it all in a low key manner - no histrionics, but plenty of her signature vocal technique and sparse accompaniment that invokes so many feelings. open.qobuz.com/track/42339197Although the video of the song is interesting, with a futuristic city landscape, the song doesn't need the visuals so I'm not posting it here.

LOL, I knew this would be met with deafening silence. Not to be discouraged by your lack of recognition for a rather talented and unique songstress, you now have detention homework: open.qobuz.com/track/92622513

Haha . . . I'll break the deafening silence for you Martin, but I think I'd Better Call Saul before I say anything.

Wow that's a great vocal presentation. I wondered where have I heard this voice/style before. It was 'Summertime Sadness'. But this 'White Mustang' is far better imo.
Atmospheric and haunting vocal delivery/production sound.

It was 'Summertime Sadness'. But this this 'White Mustang' is far better imo. Atmospheric and haunting vocal delivery/production sound. Summertime Sadness was a cracking song from her first album, together with Video Games. Her voice has matured further, but her downbeat, mostly sad, songwriting skills painting vignettes remain intact. Not every album was a hit, but when she got the songs, delivery and production just right there is no-one like her at all. Haunting is a good word for her.

Yes if I can find another song or two from her as satisfying as White Mustang that will be great. I'll check more from this album.

Yes the songs 'Love' and 'Cherry' are quite good as well from this same album. But 'White Mustang' is something else.
I find myself wondering where does a style like this come from. It can't only be a product of working in the studio with a producer. Maybe she came up with this sound on her own years ago sitting there by herself. It's magical. Something about the delivery sounds a bit detached from reality/the moment.

'Love' is a great song with some absolutely stonking bass, and the same melancholy delivery.

Here's the video. It has some great cinematography and SFX but do you find it enhances the song or detracts from it?

Try Ultraviolence. The acoustic in the album is very swimmy, but it's another powerful song.

Here's the video. It has some great cinematography and SFX but do you find it enhances the song or detracts from it? From 3:40 on I'm ok with the video because I had no imagery of my own for that section of the song. Interesting how even the trumpet playing sounds distant and a bit detached. Quite surreal. But 100% everything before 3:40 detracts from the experience imo. My imagination soars when hearing the song. The video limits my imagination and forces specific limited imagery.

Yes, Robert, I fully agree with that. In fact, almost all music videos detract from the music for me. I prefer to form my own imagery and would rather preserve it.

Yup. I've avoided music videos to favorite songs of mine my entire life for that reason.
Somehow even album art effects (though only slightly) my vision of the music in some strange way.
Her track 'God Bless America - And All Of The Beautiful Women In It' also is growing on me. What an interesting voice. Will try Ultraviolence.

Another one in the spirit of White Mustang, from her first album. Blue Jeans.

Listening to the Lust for Life album on Spotify, quite a few tracks missing, but my favourite of those available is Change. Change is a bit more upbeat, lyrically and musically .... Maybe her therapy sessions are working. .... and I love the piano accompaniment. Definitely similar style to Ethel Caine. White Mustang. Yes, it's OK. My main thought is that she shouldn't have been so shallow as to be impressed by the guy's car.

Definitely similar style to Ethel Caine. Yup, thanks Jerry, I said that too - I totally agree and nice to know I'm not alone
